Chapter 5: "On Light and Darkness: Living in an Alien World"

Michael R. Leming, Ph.D.
Professor of Sociology
Spring Semester 1998

  1. How is being "saved" basic to members' sense of self? How does a person in this church know when they're saved? How does being saved contribute to boundary maintenance between themselves and others? Why do people in this church find it even more important to maintain boundaries between themselves and other Christian groups than, say, between themselves and Jews or Buddhists?
  2. What is "witnessing"? How does it contribute to boundary maintenance?
  3. Why do fundamentalists feel so ambivalent about being involved in politics?
  4. How is being a fundamentalist sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy?
