Chapter 9: "Bringing Them In: Recruiting New Members"
Michael R. Leming, Ph.D.
Professor of Sociology
Spring Semester 1998
- What is "witnessing," what are some of the ways in which witnessing is done, and why is it so important to the people at Southside?
- If most members of Southside are very much like "us" in their social background, as the author seems to argue, why aren't more of "us" Fundamentalists? How would you account for the fact that the study's relatively well-educated, middle-class people are drawn to fundamentalism, when most people with that background are not? A related question: What sort of people are likely to become converts? How does this tie in with how the author explains the origins of the Fundamentalist movement itself?
- If you were setting up a new church group, what would be an effective way of recruiting new members to your group (based on Bible Believers)? What techniques would you use to keep them members (after all, conversion or joining the church are only the first steps)?
