Religion 251: Religion and Cultural Diversity in South Africa

Supplemental Questionnaire for Application

Moving from Cape Town eastward towards KwaZulu-Natal and then north to Johannesburg, this course will examine cultural diversity in South Africa and the role religion has played in sustaining the identity of ethnic groups. In addition to analyzing the history of racial classification in South Africa and noting how religion was used both to defend Apartheid and justify protest against it, students will study what various organizations are doing today to build a multi-racial democracy and a just social order.

The first two weeks will be spent in Western Cape Province, in both the urban areas and in the outlying rural regions. There will be excursions to Cape Point, the Wineland and Overberg districts, and picturesque places along the southern coast. We will also spend a weekend in the urban townships.
The second half of the program will involve shorter stops in more places. We will travel eastward, along the coastline, into the Eastern Cape and Kwazulu-Natal, the traditional regions of the Xhosa and Zulu people.
The final days of the program will be spent in Gauteng, the densely populated urban region that includes Johannesburg, Soweto and Pretoria.
