| Office Hours in Regents Math: |
| ||
| Class Meetings: | Class meets from 8:00am until 9:00am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in RNS 203. | ||
| Textbook: | Principles of Computer Science by Richard Brown and Steven McKelvey. Photocopied manuscripts are available (for cost) from the St. Olaf College Bookstore. Readings and homework assignments will be given from this text. It is expected that every student will have access to a personal copy. | ||
| Homework: | Homework will be given daily and will usually be due at 4:00pm two class periods after it is assigned. For example, homework given out on Wednesday will typically be due the following Monday at 4:00pm. Assignments will appear in both hard copy and electronic forms. Hard copy assignments may be turned in during class meetings or slid under my office door. Electronic submissions must be done according to instructions given in class. Late homework turned in one class meeting late will be penalized 20% of the earned points. Homework turned in more than one class period late will earn no points and will be corrected at the discretion of the homework grader. Homework points make up 20% of the course grade. Homework is a requirement of the class. If a significant amount of homework is left undone at the end of the term the effect on a student's grade may be more significant than the normal 20% weight would suggest. The precise definition of "significant" in both uses is at my discretion. | ||
| In Class Exams: | There will be three
in-class exams during the course of the semester, each worth 14% of
the course grade. The exams will be closed book, closed notes,
individual work affairs given during the normal class meeting time.
The exams will be given on Monday, October 10th, Friday, November 4th,
and Wednesday, December 7th. It is expected that students will sit
for the exam at the scheduled time. Any requests for alternate exam
accomodations must be approved by me prior to the scheduled
time for the exam.
These examinations are given under the Saint Olaf honor system. Students will be asked to carefully consider the pledge. Jurisdiction over allegations of misconduct during or surrounding examinations will fall to the Student Honor Council. | ||
| Group Projects: | Two group projects will be assigned during the course. Groups can contain anywhere from one to three students, but no more. Each group will make one submission at the end of the project. Each project is worth 5% of the course grade. You will be responsible to organizing yourselves into groups. The first project will be handed out on Wednesday, October 12th and due on Monday, October 31st. The second project will be handed out on Friday, December 2nd and due on Monday, December 12th. | ||
| Final Exam: | The final examination will be given at 9:00am on Thursday, December 15th, in RNS 203. The exam will be cumulative, covering material from throughout the semester. The exam counts for 28% of the course grade. Failure to sit for the final exam is grounds for failure in the course regardless of performance on in-class exams, projects and homework. Requests to take the exam at alternate times must be directed to me prior to the scheduled time for the exam. Generally, such requests will not be granted except for true emergencies. (Keep this in mind when making end-of-term travel plans!!) | ||
| Students with Disabilities: | If you have a documented disability for which accommodations may be required in this class, please contact Connie Ford (ford@stolaf.edu) or Erin Larson (larsonee@stolaf.edu) in the Academic Support Center (507-786-3288 or Buntrock 108) as soon as possible to arrange accommodations. If you have already presented your documentation and/or arranged accommodations through Student Disability Services, you are required to provide me with your accommodation letter within the first two weeks of class. Accommodations will only be provided after the letter is submitted to me and with sufficient lead-time for me to arrange testing or other accommodations. |
