| I have intentionally not signed the pledge. |
This is the language approved by the Saint Olaf Faculty and the Saint Olaf Student Senate for honor system pledges. This language should appear on all examinations and quizzes given under the Saint Olaf College Honor System.
If a student fails to sign the pledge and checks the box, the exam must be immediately turned over to Barb Schmidt in the Dean of Students Office. A representative of the student honor council will undertake an investigation. In this scenario, professors should not question the exam's owner as to why the pledge was left unsigned.
If a student fails to sign the pledge and leaves the box unchecked, the professor may, but is not required to, contact the student for the sole purpose of determining whether the failure to sign was an oversight or an intentional act. If an oversight, the professor may treat the exam as though it were signed. If an intentional act, the professor must immediately turn over the exam to Barb Schmidt in the Dean of Students office. If the professor chooses not to contact the owner of the exam, the exam must be turned over to Barb Schmidt in the Dean of Students Office. The professor may not assume the absence of a signature is a simple oversight.
If you have questions about this procedure, please contact Barb Schmidt in the Dean of Students Office, or Prof. Kay Smith of MSCS, the current faculty observer to the Honor Council.
