Background

I am Paul Niemisto, Associate Professor of Music at St. Olaf. My degrees are : B.M., M.M., University of Michigan; PhD, University of Minnesota.

I am Director of the St. Olaf Norseman Band, Trombone Choir, and Tuba Euphonium Ensemble, teach low brass instruments and some classes.

In earlier years I was a member of the Scandinavia Symphony Orchestra of Detroit, Toledo (Ohio)Symphony, Flint (Michigan) Symphony, Las Palmas Opera Festival Orchestra (Spain), Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (Canada). I studied bass trombone with Edward Kleinhammer of the Chicago Symphony and tuba with Abe Torchinsky at the Univertsity of Michigan. In recent years, I get around a bit as a clinician and soloist at festivals in U.S., Canada, and Scandinavia. In 1990 I founded the Ameriikan Poijat Finnish brass band, and earlier (1979) the Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra. I still direct both. In Minnesota I have been bass trombonist with the Rochester Orchestra, and euphoniumist with the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band.

My current research interests, started in about 1990, are centered on historical brass bands, specifically, the brass bands of Finland's 19th Century military. These pursuits have been supported by being a Fulbright Senior Scholar and an American Scandinavian Foundation Scholar, allowing for research and travel in Finland and St. Petersburg, Russia.

I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and began my teaching and playing career in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia, Canada.
