Personal Information

I graduated from Kenyon College in Gambier, OH in 1981 with majors in mathematics and physics. From there, I went to graduate school in mathematics at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. I received my Ph.D. In 1985 in mathematical physics. My dissertation, entitled “The Zn Baxter Model” was in lattice statistical mechanics. After Dartmouth, spent some time at the University of California, Davis. I joined St. Olaf in 1986.

These days, my interests are in applied mathematics, especially as it relates to computation and algorithms. I also specialize in software and database design and implementation. Currently, I am involved in the College's work on redesigning the student information system. I enjoy teaching classes from mathematics, statistics, and computer science. I also spend far too much time investigating various mathematical/statistical questions related to baseball.

Outside of St. Olaf, I like to golf (to some extent!) and to run on a semi-regular basis. For entertainment, I very much enjoy music and reading. I cherish spending time with my son Gabriel (age 15) and my daughter Marianna (age 20, currently attending Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.).
