Homework Policy:
With few exceptions, you will have two kinds of assignments each day:
-
A preview assignment covering the material to be discussed in the
next class period. For each preview assignment, you are to outline or otherwise
summarize (in one page!) the main points of your reading and work a few
basic problems. In your outline, include important definitions, formulas,
sketches, and examples as well as any questions you may have as you read
the material. Your preview assignment is a very important part of the your
work in this class. Since the in-class work will depend to some extent
on the questions raised by your reading, it will not necessarily include
all of the course material. There will be some material for which you
are responsible that we will not cover directly in class. You will
use your outlines and associated preview exercises in several ways:
-
to help you on a short unannounced quiz at the beginning of some class
periods;
-
to help structure small-group discussions and tasks; and
-
to help identify questions that you would like addressed in class.
-
A look-back assignment based on the material discussed in class
that day. This assignment will be due by the beginning of the 2nd class
following the assignment. You are encouraged to work with other class members
to do your homework assignments, and may if you wish, submit one paper
for two people. (If you do this, be sure to put the names of both contributors
on the paper and take turns writing the final draft so that you both get
your writing critiqued.)
No late homework will be accepted. However, three preview quizzes
and the three lowest homework scores will be deleted from consideration
when grades are calculated, to allow for emergencies or illness.
Test and Final Examination Dates and Policy:
Tests are tentatively scheduled for March 7, April 11, and May 9.
The actual dates may be changed if conditions warrant and changes will
be announced at least a week ahead of time. The final examination
is scheduled for the afternoon of May 19, and you are expected to take
then. Plane tickets, weddings, and other exams are not reasons for
rescheduling the final exam.
Skills Tests:
While the primary emphasis in this class is on higher order thinking,
some degree of proficiency with calculus computation skills is also essential.
Consequently, you may be required to pass one or two Calculus Skills
tests, which you will take on your own time without a calculator and retake
until you achieve a passing score.
