Step 1: Press and hold the <alt> key. While the <alt> key is down, type either the "e," the "i," the "u," or the " ` ".

Step 2: Lift up on those keys and then press the letter you would like to accent. Here is the list of keys which will give you the accents:

<alt> + "e" = accent aigu. (e.g. é). 
<alt> + " ` " = accent grave (e.g. è).
<alt> + "i" = accent ciconflexe (e.g. ê).
<alt> + "u" = accent tréma (e.g. ä, ë, ï, ü).
<alt> + " ' " (apostrophe) = ligature æ
