The robot deck contains the sectors that do the work. They are arranged (laid out) around the circumference of a circle that describes the radial arm travel (theta coordinate). External to the robot deck are various computers and lab instruments into or through which are pumped solutions for analysis. This layout is illustrated here. The sectors are periodically rearranged (called" remapping") or exchanged for newer devices.
