A Student's Guide to Civic Engagement:

What is Civic Engagement and Why Should You Care?

During the months of July and August in Summer 2011, we tackled the question: how can academic civic engagement contribute to students’ introduction to a liberal arts college?  As participants in the 2008-2010 cohort of the American Conversations program, Professor Eric Fure-Slocum asked us to assess the ACE component of this four-part course.

Drawing from our own civic engagement experiences participating in projects organized around the theme of “citizenship,” we considered how we, as students, might have been better prepared for student- community collaborations.  Throughout the Summer we interviewed members of our cohort.  We utilized their responses, as well as our summer research on the pedagogy of ACE, to construct what we hope will be an effective guide to civic engagement.
