Summer Internship Program
Expectations

What you should know about the program as you apply

Leaders for Social Change participants are expected to...

  • In collaboration with the program director, apply and interview for one or more specific positions until they find an internship that fits for both them and the host site. Program director will provide description of possible internship positions.
  • Prepare for their internship by getting involved with your organization and/or completing background reading before the start of your internship (approx. 10-15 hours)
  • Give my focused energy to the program from June 2nd to August 2nd, 2013
  • Participate in the LSC orientation (June 3rd and 4th)
  • Work 35 hours per week as an intern
    • Each intern will be allowed a maximum of one vacation day (with prior approval from site supervisor)
    • Other missed hours will need to be made up
  • Complete a mid-summer and end-of-the-summer internship self-evaluation
  • Participate in the four day-long Civic Engagement Seminars during the summer (seminars will typically take place on Fridays)
  • Participate in a weekly community meal and community conversation
  • Contribute to the development of your community life and sharing house responsibilities
  • Prioritize time and relationships with their fellow community members (LSC is not a good fit for students who hope to spend more than a couple weekends away from their housemates)
  • Abstain from outside employment and from any other outside commitments which require more than three hours of time each week
  • Serve as a positive representative of St. Olaf in the community
  • Complete academic requirements associated with the 0.25 or 0.5 credit academic internship (pre-program reflection, short readings, blogging, final poster, final presentations, etc.)
  • Abide by the following policies:
    • Overnight guests must stay in guest room
    • Alcohol (and other illegal substances) are not allowed in the community house
    • Dating between interns is not allowed
  • Continue involvement in Leaders for Social Change Program after completion of the summer program. During the academic year students will be expected to participate in many of the following activities:
    • Poster session/presentations about LSC experience to the campus community
    • Guest presenters or panelists in classes or for other student groups
    • Work with the Piper Center to make connections, promote and facilitate effective internships, civic engagement and vocational reflection for other students
    • Attend periodic gatherings/seminars with other LSC students

Leaders for Social Change participants will receive the following benefits and support from St. Olaf:

  • Free housing for the duration of the program
  • Support in identifying a meaningful internship
  • Faculty supervisor for their academic internship
  • Stipend of $2300
    • Participants will be expected to contribute $225 towards a community food budget
    • Half of the stipend will distributed by June 10th, the other half will be distributed in August after completion of all program requirements
  • Tuition scholarship for a 0.25 or 0.5 credit academic internship
  • Support in reflecting on the internship experience, vocational discernment and career exploration

Students must complete program requirements to earn a passing grade for the academic internship.
