ServiceLocal Internship & Civic Engagement Opportunities with Community Organizations

Completing part-time internships and civic engagement projects with local community organizations (nonprofits, schools and governmental organizations) is a great way to extend classroom learning, gain experience, and make a difference. Students may have the opportunity to contribute as a part- or full-time intern, regular volunteer, community-based work study or as part of an academic civic engagement course project.

If you are interested in learning more about any of the opportunities, please communicate your interest directly with the organizational contact. It is important that you clarify the expectations of your involvement so that it is meaningful experience for both you and the community partner. It is recommended that you meet with organizational contact to clarify expectations before you commit to a project. Please utilize the Piper Center if you need assistance identifying, applying for, or reflecting on your community experiences.

Friends of Way Park
Issue/Population: Environmental Sustainability
PO Box 342, Northfield, MN 55057
Contact: Matt Rohn, rohn@stolaf.edu

My work on the long-term realization of the Way Park master plan provides individual students or small teams of them potential civic engagement opportunities close to campus and with a St. Olaf faculty member as a contact. What follows are possibilities for the 2011- 12 academic year: Use the new rain gardens being created in the park to help promote rain gardens and education about them in Northfield. Friends of Way Park has $1700 in grant money for this. The Cannon River Watershed Partnership has also been actively involved in the rain garden proposal, though students will learn that some crucial city agencies have resisted the city’s promotion of rain gardens.  Develop concepts for a garden to memorialize the hospital having been on the Way Park site, create strategies for bringing a memorial garden to fruition, and maybe help initiate the creation of a memorial garden. The Friends of Way Park and the park master plan came into being when the Northfield Hospital left its 2nd Street location for where it currently is.  Help bring into fruition a bike path from St. Olaf College to a potential transit center at the intersection of 2nd Street and Highway 3 and then on to where current bikeways connect. Northfield has been developing bikeways for some time now, but without much planning for the west side of town. Now is a good time to start this process on the west side for various reasons: 2nd Street, which is a good option for a bikeway, is about to be rebuilt from Lincoln to close to where a potential transit hub is being considered as part of tentative approval the City has given to move the railroad station.

Development of a volunteer transportation group for senior citizens. The volunteer drivers would drive Adult Day clients from surrounding communities (forth and back) on a daily basis. The drivers would also be available to the community as a whole for errands, MD appts, etc. It could include researching grants for the project to be sustainable. Also, it would be REALLY exciting to see if there are any dealerships who would want to donate a van or other vehicle to the Adult Day. The county and Veterans Administration provide some transportation funding for seniors. Some research could prove if any other payors (insurance co, etc) have funding for this important function to keep seniors in their home. First: What public transportation is currently available?
