6 Person Volleyball Rules

 

1.        POSTING

A.      Schedules will be posted on the Intramural bulletin board located next to the Athletics Office in Skoglund AND on the Intramurals Website at www.stolaf.edu/recreation/intramurals/schedules.

 

2.        EQUIPMENT

A.      Team captains or representatives may check out volleyballs with a valid St. Olaf ID from the Equipment Room.  The supervisor will supply the game ball.  The teams can decide on which ball to use for game.

 

3.        PLAYERS

A.      A player may only play on one men’s or women’s team and one coed team.  Players must have a valid St. Olaf ID to be listed on the roster. Teams may add players to their roster by filling out an add form at least one day prior to that game.  Players must play in one (1) regular season game to be eligible to play in the playoffs.

  1. A team consists of six (6) players (must play with 3 males and 3 females), however, a team may start a game with a minimum of two (2) players.  If playing with 2 players, there must be one (1) male and one (1) female. If playing with 3 players, a team may play with two (2) males and one (1) female or two (2) females and one (1) male. If playing with 4 players, there must be two (2) males and two (2) females.  If playing with 5 players, a team may play with three (3) males and two (2) females, or three (3) females and two (2) males. A team can consist of any amount of females (i.e. 6 females, 4 females, etc…) 
  2. Free substitution is permitted.
  3. Each team may have one (1) current intercollegiate player on their roster provided there is no organized team practice.

 

4.        THE GAME

A.      An official match will be the best two (2) of three (3) games.  All games played to 30 points. A time limit will be enforced if necessary.  If the time limit occurs, the game is over if the team winning is ahead by two (2) points.  If not, then play until a team is ahead by two (2) points.

  1. A coin flip or odd/even call at the start of the first and third game will determine choice of serve and court side.  Teams will change sides at the end of the first game.  Team who lost serve at the flip or call serves second game will serve first. All games will use rally scoring.
  2. Teams have five (5) minutes after scheduled start time to begin play, if they are missing players the game will be forfeited.
  3. 1st forfeit:  $5 forfeit fee to be paid within 24 hours of the forfeit.

2nd forfeit:  Team is automatically DROPPED from the league!

  1. Teams are allowed one (1) time-out per game of 30 seconds in length.
  2. There will be no time limit for the Championship match.

 

5.        RULES

A.      Net height will be 7’10”.  Let serves will be played (serve hits the net and goes over).

  1. Except for the serve, the ball may be contacted by any part of the body above the waist.
  2. No blocking or attacking the serve.
  3. A ball hitting the ceiling on the opposite side of the net is out-of-bounds.  A ball hitting the ceiling above the team’s playing court (side) may be played by that team.
  4. A ball may not by played if it goes into another court that has play in progress, however, it may be played if there is not a game in progress.  If a match starts with play in progress on another court, the entire match is played with this restriction. 
  5. A ball that hits the boundary lines is in-bounds.
  6. A player may not touch the net or may not step over the center line with his entire foot.
  7. Reaching over the net is only permitted during the follow through of a hit made on a player’s own side, and during a block or block attempt.
