Floor Hockey Rules

POSTINGS

Schedules for the league will be posted on the bulletin boards located right next to P E / Athletics Office in Skoglund.

EQUIPMENT

1.        Goalie MUST wear a goalie mask.

2.        All players must use the sticks provided by the Intramural Sports Program. Intramural sports will provide helmets and chest protectors for the goalies, but all other protective equipment must be supplied by the teams.

  1. Chest protectors must not exceed width of your body and arm protection must not exceed 1” inch thick.
  2. Shoulder protection can be worn, provided it does not extend down the arm.

3.        Goalie may wear either a baseball glove OR an original goalie glove. NO blockers allowed on stick hand.

4.        Leg Protection:

  1. Goalie is allowed to use equipment to protect his/her knees, shins, and ankles NOT exceeding the width of baseball catcher’s equipment.
  2. Players are allowed to wear soccer shin guards to protect their shins from the puck and sticks.

5.        NO JEWELRY, NO JEANS, NO HATS (what’s so ever), NO BANDANAS.  ALL MUST COME OFF!

6.        All players are encouraged to wear safety goggles while playing.

THE TEAM

1.        Each team consists of a total of 5 players. Teams may play with 4 players if necessary.

  1. Team consists of five players. One goalie and four other players that are free to roam the rink.  

THE GAME

1.        The game consists of three periods of 15 minutes each, with a 2 minute rest between periods.  Goals are to be changed after each period.

2.        The puck/ball will be dropped in the middle of the center court at the start of the game as well as at the beginning of each period

3.        Play can’t start until the whistle is blown.  Penalty for starting before the whistle is loss of possession. 

4.        Players may not play the puck back in their goalie’s crease.  The penalty will be loss of possession, play resumes at nearest drop spot.

5.        Center starts the play from the center of the circle.  There is no scoring from the center circle unless a defensive or offensive player first touches the puck.  All players must be outside the 10-foot restraining circle.

6.        There are no time-outs.  Officials will carry extra pucks and drop one into play if it goes out of bounds. 

7.        No overtimes will be played during the regular season.

8.        Overtimes in playoffs will being with a dropped puck at center court and will be sudden death. As many 5-minute overtimes as needed, will be played until a winner is determined. All regulation rules apply. No shootouts!

9.        The clock starts when the puck is put in play from the center circle and is touched by a member of either team.

10.     Play is continuous throughout the first 18 minutes of the BOTH HALVES.  The clock will stop ONLY on injuries, penalties and after every goal during that time.

11.     The clock will stop on EVERY WHISTLE during the last 1 minute of all periods.

12.     When any player accumulates 3 fouls for roughing and/or misconduct, he is out for the duration of the game.

13.     Free substitution is allowed.  A player entering the game as a substitute should use the stick of the player being replaced.  Change of goalies can only take place when the clock is stopped.

14.     Change of positions between offense and defense can only be made when puck is dead and/or clock is stopped.

15.     Officials may stop play for injuries or extenuating circumstances.

16.     Players may catch the puck if it is in flight, but them must drop it from where they caught it.

17.     On all inbounds plays, the ball must make contact with a player (other than the inbounder or the goalie) before a goal can be scored.

SCORING

1.        A goal is scored anytime the puck touches or crosses the goal line or is above the goal line.

2.        Under no circumstances will a goal be counted on a foul, or with offensive players in the goal box. A stick is considered a part of the player.

3.        On shots where the puck is deflected off a player or equipment into the goal, the goal counts.

4.        Goals do not count if the puck is kicked or hit with the hand or foot into the goal.

GOALKEEPING

1.        The goalie may use their hands, stick or baseball glove to clear the puck from the goal.

2.        A misconduct foul is assessed if the goalie throws the puck past the centerline.

3.        A misconduct foul is assessed if the goalie uses their stick to clear the puck across the centerline

4.        The goalie is not exempt from penalty when he/she is outside the goal box.

5.        The goalie has only 3 seconds to play the puck from the crease once he/she has gained full possession.  Penalty: Loss of possession, play resumes at nearest drop spot.

6.        Penalty when goalie throws puck out of play.

7.        Shots directly on a goal or directly above the goal that go out of bounds shall be returned to the goalie to be put back into play.

FOULS

1.        Roughing Fouls (All roughing fouls are 2 minute fouls)

a.        Slashing – when an opponent is hit with the stick and in the judgment of the official, the player slashing has no chance to hit the puck.

b.       Contact with an opposing player with the stick above the waist.

c.        Contact with the goalie while in the goal box.

d.       Pushing, Kneeing, Blocking, Tripping, Hooking

2.        Slapshots:  The use of Slapshots at any time throughout the game will result in a penalty foul, (No goal allowed.)

3.        Bench Penalty (2 minutes)

a.        Unsportsmanlike conduct by anyone on the bench.

b.       Excessive delay of game.

4.        Misconduct (All misconduct fouls are 5 minute fouls)

a.        Deliberately hitting or kicking the puck during a substitution.

b.       Deliberately using the body to not allow the puck to be played by an opponent.

c.        Falling down or playing the puck while lying on the floor.

d.       Players being on the wrong side of the foul line.

e.        Players inside of the goal box.  Offense and Defense.  If it is accidental a penalty will not be called unless contact is made with the goalie.

f.         Playing the puck with the hand to a teammate.

g.       Deliberately hooking, grabbing or kicking the stick out of an opponent’s hand.

h.       Swinging the stick above the waist during play.

5.        Administration of Fouls

a.        A player who is charged with a roughing or misconduct foul must sit out two minutes and their team must play shorthanded during this time.

                                                               i.      If a goal is scored before the penalty is up, the player can return to the floor.

                                                              ii.      Roughing or misconduct against the goalie – the goalie may remain in the game but their team must play shorthanded, position optional.

b.       Any player charged with 3 foul (combo of roughing and misconduct or 3 of either roughing or misconduct) must be removed from the remainder of the game.

c.        Officials have the authority to call a bench penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

d.       Fighting or deliberately fouling another player calls for automatic ejection from the game plus a two-minute penalty.  Team must play shorthanded the full two minutes, regardless of the number of goals scored against them.

e.        Disrespect to an official, excessive profanity, and abuse of facility of equipment will lead to ejection.

f.         Official’s calls are FINAL!!!!

MERCY RULE

The game will be called if a team is up ten (10) goals at any point in the game.

BLEEDING

Any player that is bleeding must leave the game immediately.  The bleeding must be stopped and the wound securely covered with bandage before that player can continue playing.  If there is blood on the Intramural jersey, you must get a clean one before resuming play.

FOREFIETS

1st Forfeit: $5 re-entry fee, which must be paid within 24 hours of the forfeit.

2nd forfeit:  Team is automatically dropped from the league!!

PLAYOFFS

1.        All players must play in one regular season game to be eligible for playoffs.

EJECTIONS:  Anytime 2 players from a team have been removed from the contest for unsportsmanlike conduct, flagrant foul, or fighting, the contest shall be declared a forfeit for the team.  Any manager, coach, or player ejected from the game may be asked to leave the gym area.  If he/she returns into the gym area for any reason, the opposing team will be credited with the win by forfeit and the game will be terminated and campus security will be notified.
