Coed Inner Tube Water Polo Rules

Schedules for the league will be posted on the bulletin boards located right next to P E / Athletics Office in Skoglund

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF CAPTAINS OF TEAMS

1.      Read-know the rules.  Have a team meeting.

2.      Control teammates and your spectators.

3.      Represent your team at meeting and during games.

4.      All Team Members must bring St. Olaf Student ID to participate.

 

ELIGIBILITY

1.      To be eligible, a player must be currently enrolled at St. Olaf, or be a current faculty/staff member.

2.      All eligibility protests must be settled within 24 hrs. after the game or when the protested first enters the game.

3.      You may play for one team ONLY!

4.      All players must bring their ID to every contest! No exceptions!

5.      All players must have played in one regular season game to be eligible for the playoffs.

 

PRE-GAME

1.      Pre-game talk with captains:

(a) Ground rules     (b) Captains questions  (c) Rock/Paper/Scissors for side

2.      Games will start as quickly as possible, so that the maximum time can be used for the game.  If a team is LATE, pre-game practice for that team will be DENIED.

3.      Forfeit time is 5 minutes past the hour.

 

TEAM

A team can have a maximum of 7 players in the water at a time with a maximum of 4 male players co-recreation.  A team must have at least 5 players to play. If a co-recreation team is unable to field 7 players the team may use 6 (3 men/3 women) or 5 (3 men/2 women or as many women as you have). Unlimited substitutions are allowed, when the official stops play.

 

Equipment

a) Inner Tube Water Polo will provide Inner Tubes and a game ball for each contest.

b) All participants must obey the rules outlined by the pool facility.

c) All players must sit in a horizontal position, facing up inside the Inner tube.

d) If a player falls out of their tube, the player may not participate in the game in any way.

 

Substitutions

a) Teams may substitute when

i) a goal is scored,

ii) the play ends because the ball went out of bounds,

iii) a time-out is called.

b) Only the team that gains possession of the ball may make a substitution.

 

Game Length

a) Each half will be 15 minutes long with a continuously running clock. Half-time will be 3 minutes or less. Teams will change sides at half-time.

b) Injury time will not be added to the end of the game. The clock will not stop for injuries.

 

Start of Play

a) To start each half, both teams line up at opposite ends of the pool.

b) All players, except the goalie, must be in contact with the wall before play begins.

c) The official throws the ball into the center of the court while simultaneously whistling to begin play.

d) On the official's whistle or when the ball leaves the official's hand, both teams may paddle their Tubes toward the ball. Pushing off the wall is legal at start.

6) Stoppage of Play

a) The Official blowing his/her whistle always signals an immediate stoppage of play and a dead ball.

b) Each team will be allowed two time-outs per game. Only the player with control of the ball may call a time out.

c) During the regular season and playoffs, all ties at the end of playing time will be broken by a shootout.

 

Free Throws

a) Free throws are awarded for violations at the point nearest the spot of the infraction.

b) During a free throw, the offense has 3 seconds to pass the ball to a teammate.

c) A goal may not be scored until a second offensive player touches the ball after the free throw.

d) The defense must provide 2 feet of space from the point of the free throw.

 

Penalty Shots

a) Penalty shots shall be taken by the offended player at the backstroke flags.

b) No defensive player may be within 2 feet of the shooter.

c) If the result of the penalty shot is not a goal, the ball remains in play.

d) Exception: Shoot out- The ball is dead after the shot is taken in a shoot out.

 

Play Area

a) The court is the rectangle formed by the backstroke flags, pool walls and lane lines.

b) A ball is considered in-bounds until it makes contact with the pool deck or pool surface outside the boundary area.

c) The ball changes possession when it becomes out-of-bounds.

d) A player may make a play on a ball outside the play court as long as

i) the ball is in the air,

ii) the player's tube is in-bounds,

iii) and the player remains in their tube.

e) Any shot or pass that ricochets off a diving board, backstroke flags or other pool equipment within the Water Polo court boundary and lands in-bounds is a live ball.

 

Play Area – Goal Box

a) The goal box is the area between the edge of the pool and the orange cones (aprox 10 feet from the end of the pool).

b) Only the goalie is permitted within the goal box.

c) A defensive play may not voluntarily travel inside the goal box to make a defensive play. An infraction results in a penalty shot.

i) Exception: A defending player is permitted in the goal box to retrieve a ball outside the goalie's reach. The player must give the ball back to the goalie before play resumes.

d) An offensive player may not voluntarily travel inside the goal box to make an offensive play. An infraction results in a free throw by the goalie.

e) A ball that travels out-of-bounds within the goal box is given to the goalie for a free throw.

 

Goals

a) A goal is scored when a legal shot (taken outside the goal box) completely crosses the goal line.

b) A player scoring a goal must remain in his/her after the goal is scored or the score will be disallowed.

c) A shot taken from inside the goal box will be disallowed and the ball will be given to the goalie for a free throw.

 

Possession

a) The last player to make contact with the ball has possession.

b) Players move with the ball by

i) pushing it in the water,

ii) holding it between their knees,

iii) gripping it with 2 hands,

iv) gripping it with one hand,

v) pressing it against their body,

vi) or holding it in their lap.

c) A player may not hold the ball completely under the water.

d) Players may not deliberately hold the ball to delay the game.

i) At the Official's discretion, a "Delay of Game Warning" will be issued.

ii) Subsequent offenses will result in a "Delay of Game Penalty" and a Free Throw for the offensive team.

e) When two opposing players are both in possession of the ball, the ball will be awarded to the offensive team for a free throw.

 

Goalie

a) The goalie may not leave his/her tube in an attempt to block a shot from entering the goal.

i) If the goalie leaves his/her tube while blocking a shot on goal, this will result in a penalty shot

b) The goalie may never pass the ball beyond the mid-pool line.

c) The goalie may not leave the goal box area during play.

d) Once the goalie gains possession of the ball, he/she will have 3 seconds to release the ball.

e) A ball in play may be passed back to the goalie. The goalie will have 3 seconds to release to the ball.

f) After a score, the ball will be put into play by the goalie. The goalie must call “ball in” in order to restart play.

 

Foul

a) Players may not

i) hold, push, hit, splash, dunk, or tackle any other players with or without the ball.

b) If a player is in control of the ball, the player MAY NOT be touched.

c) Any fouls will result in a Free Throw.

 

Contact Between Players

a) Inner tube to inner tube contact is legal.

b) Incidental Inner tube to by contact is legal.

c) A defending player may touch the ball when it is in possession of an opposing player.

d) Any illegal contact between players will result in a free throw.

 

Shootouts

a) Five players from each team will be selected by the team to shoot (goalkeepers may be one of the shooters).

b) Shooters do not have to have been in the pool at the end of play. However, the goalkeepers will be the same as the goalkeepers from the end of play.

c) A coin flip or another creative method of determining order will decide which team shoots first.

d) Each team has a total of 5 penalty shots and will alternate each shot. No rebounds.

e) The Official signals the start of each penalty shot.

f) If the score is tied at the end of the first shootout, another shootout will be conducted. During the second shootout, the game is won if, after ANY equal number of shots, the tie is broken. Only players who shot in the first round are eligible to shoot in the second round. The gender order established in the first round will be maintained in the second round.

g) Teams must have an equal ratio of male to females during penalty shots. The ratio male to females during penalty shots is set by the lower of the two teams ratios at the end of regulation play.

 

 

Misconduct

a) All penalties are administered at the officials discretion

b) 1 min. penalty

i) A player issued a 1 minute penalty will sit out of the game for one minute.

ii) The following offenses result in a 1 min. penalty

(1) Arguing with the official

(2) Inappropriate language

(3) repeated violation of the rules

 

c) 2 min. penalty

i) A player issued a 2 min. penalty will sit out of the game for two minutes.

ii) The following offenses result in a 2 min. penalty

(1) Flagrant foul

(2) Inappropriate language directed another player or official

(3) additional violations after a 1 min. penalty

 

d) Ejection

i) A player ejected will be ejected from that game and the next game.  They will also have to apply to be re-instated in the league.

ii) The following offenses results in a ejection

(1) intentional flagrant fouls

(2) dangerous play

(3) malicious actions

(4) multiple 1 min. or 2 min. offenses.

 

Referee

A referee will work every game and will have complete authority in the pool. Only the team captain may speak to the referees.
