PRE-MEDICINE

1. Entry Level Courses

The Chemistry or Biology faculty should be contacted. Entry level courses usually include Math 120, 122 (or 126, 128) and the beginning major courses in Biology or chemistry. Chemistry the first year would involve chemistry 125 (or 121, 123) and 126 followed by chemistry 247, 248, 253, 254 and Bio 125 and 126 the sophomore year. If a student initially takes Biology courses, Biology 125 and 126 would be combined with a course in calculus. The sophomore year would include courses in Biology and the initial courses in Chemistry.

2. General Advice

There is no major in pre-medicine as such, but students are strongly advised to consult the section under medicine, which is one of the sub-headings under Pre-Professional Preparation contained in the St. Olaf College Catalog. Note that the Medical College Aptitude Test (MCAT) is usually taken at the end of the junior year of study.

3. Tips on Scheduling

Be sure that Physics through 125, Chemistry through 248 and at least two Biology courses are completed before the end of the junior year.

4. Non-Major Information

There is no major and thus no specific non-major information. Needless to say, all students are welcome and encouraged to pursue courses that relate to the study of medicine, including fields of health maintenance, nutrition, medical ethics, etc.
