What’s a Math Clinic Tutor?

Math Clinic Tutors are hired during the first week of each semester to help their fellow students with the ideas and problems that arise in calculus.  There are separate clinics for Calculus I and Calculus II and clinic tutors are hired to help with one or both of these courses.  Math Clinic Tutors circulate around the room(s) assigned, working one-on-one with students who have dropped in to ask questions.  Questions may have to do with readings in the text, ideas that don’t make sense or exercises that the student finds difficult.

The job of the Math Clinic Tutor is not to give students answers to their questions as much as it is to ask leading questions to help the students figure out what’s going on.  Think of them as ‘math coaches.’

Math Clinic Tutors must have a strong background in calculus, the ability to relate well to other students and to ‘play’ with calculus ideas. Though facility with the calculations of calculus is necessary, it is much more useful to be able to figure out new problem types one has not seen before.
