Student Spotlight on
Interviewing Skills:

Nicole Krautbauer

Nicole_Krautbauer

How did you hear about and apply for the internship with Securian?
I signed up to attend the MN Private Schools Job and Internship Fair and found Securian Financial Group on the company list.  Since I'm an Economics major with an emphasis in Finance, I wanted an internship that dealt with finance or a position at a financial services company in order to learn more about finance in the business world.  I emailed Securian my resume before the fair, and I was chosen for a pre-select interview.

What are some things that you do to help keep you calm before and during an interview?
Interviews always seem intimidating to me, but I try to remember that I'm trying to figure out if a certain position and company are a good fit for me at the same time the interviewer is deciding if I'm right for the job.  It's a two-way street. Running through potential interview questions and doing mock interviews in the CEL also help me to keep calm.  I know that I'm prepared.

What is the hardest question an interviewer has ever asked you?
Tell me about a time when you heard someone say something bad about you. What was your reaction?  That's the hardest question I've ever been asked, but an interviewer asked me another question that caught me off-guard. Tell me about a time when you had to make a quick decision without muc information.  I think a question like this is on the CEL website, but I could never think of a quick decision I had made, so I thought no one would actually ask it.  I came up with an answer, but you should use all the questions on the CEL website to prepare because interviewers do ask them!

Do you have any recommendations for students preparing for a big interview?
You should definitely use the resources in the CEL.  Set up a couple of mock interviews so you have practice answering interview questions.  The staff also helps you improve your answers.  Take advantage of the interview questions posted on the CEL website.  Practice your answers to those questions so you know what type of questions to expect.  Remember to try to
stay calm and be yourself!
