Student Spotlight on
Ole Ventures:
Tyler Hayes

What is OleVentures?
Ole Ventures is a student-led entrepreneurial group on campus. We really aim to foster entrepreneurship in all its capacities. Whether someone comes to us with a spur-of-the-moment idea that just needs guidance or a student has a great idea for the next big thing but has no money, OV has young people with experience in all those areas ready to help. In truth, OV actually serves many different areas of business beyond entrepreneurship. We provide workshops aimed towards preparing students for their post-college life, we host events with speakers like Michael Coles (CEO, Caribou Coffee), and we also run ventures of our own, like Ole Gear.
Do you have to have a certain major to get involved with OleVentures?
Actually, no! I am double majoring in Psychology and Asian Studies and I've never spent a day in a business-related class here at Olaf. That's not to say I wouldn't like to, though... St. Olaf definitely has an amazing faculty in the Management Studies department. Not to mention the fine people who work at the CEL, too (both of which are directly involved with OV). Andrew Foxwell, Mike Getter, Dan Nemcek and I currently run Modica Marketing, which is a great marketing solution for start-up companies, so it definitely does help to have some sort of entrepreneurial background though by no means is it required. If you've got the passion and the drive, that's already more than most people!
What is the coolest experience you've had being involved with this organization?
No doubt about it, the travel experience that I've raked in has been extremely rewarding. Last year, we had an Elevator Pitch Competition where any student (or faculty or staff, for that matter) could get up on stage in Viking Theater and "pitch" a business plan in three minutes. The idea is that if a student were to get stuck in an elevator with a CEO, they would have their idea summarized into a quick, punchy, and ultimately catchy presentation. I, along with the winners, then traveled to Chicago to the National CEO Conference where all the winners went to compete with their pitches for start-up funding. St. Olaf may not have won, but I think the free weekend in Chicago definitely made up for it...
What advice do you have for other students?
Get involved. NOW. I think we all know how volatile procrastination can be. In my experience with entrepreneurship at Olaf, as well as other schools, companies, and countries around the world, there are essentially two types of people: those who say "I'll do it later" and those who say "When can we get started?" I once talked to a former Ole grad from '82 who said that, one night, while he and his roommate were listening to a vinyl album, his friend said to him "You know, this sound can be digitized. All of it can be turned into information that could be stored on a disc." But he never did anything about it. He had the idea, the means, but he didn't have the passion. Just think of where he'd be now!
Any post-graduate plans?
I currently write for a start-up magazine on the west coast called Jack & Jill Magazine (a sort of mix between Maxim, GQ, and Cosmo). At the same time, Modica Marketing is something I'd really like to see through after graduating, so I'll probably stick around Minnesota for a while before I take off anywhere. New Zealand seems like a nice place to start, any takers?
