Student Spotlight:
Sarah Frank

Which CEL services are you currently seeking?
I'm in the process of making my master resume to use as a template for any job or volunteer position that I may apply for within the next couple of years. I visited the CEL a few days ago and had a peer advisor look over my list of activities. She showed me the different resume examples and gave me handouts with good tips about word usage and resume formatting.
I worked on my resume and came in a couple of days later to meet with Megan. She looked over my rough draft and offered suggestions in terms of style, language and organization. Megan said that I could meet with her again for final edits. I'm currently in the process of finishing up the resume and will definitely send it back to Megan to have her look at again.
What did you find most helpful at your visit?
It felt so great to have a professional look over my resume. As a senior, I'm currently doing a lot of thinking about what's next. It's pretty intimidating to know that my resume--that one little page of paper--is going to be what determines whether or not an employer wants to follow up with me. I don't want to miss out on any opportunities because I did not prepare to my full capabilities. The CEL makes it so I don't have to rely solely on my limited experience with applications when it comes to preparing for and planning my future.
Do you have any plans for life after graduation?
I'm looking into a variety of domestic volunteer opportunities for the next couple of years. Right now Teach For America, Lutheran Volunteer Corps, or work with a nonprofit are on the top of my list. The opportunities are endless, and this is both exciting and intimidating.
Do you have any advice for your peers, both underclassmen and fellow seniors?
In terms of preparation, I think using the resources that St. Olaf provides (like the CEL and the ASC) is something that I really wish I would have taken more advantage of throughout my time at St. Olaf. It wasn't until coming in and seeing all their resources that I really understood how helpful they could have been throughout my college career. I recently found out that the CEL offers practice interviews, which would be so helpful to seniors, or anyone getting ready to apply for jobs or internships. I definitely plan on using this service.
My general advice is rather simple. Looking back on my last four years at St. Olaf I realize that I have most enjoyed growing as a person in community with others. I have found a certain peace in balancing my personal and academic goals with my relationships and my extra-curricular activities. Discovering the ways in which your gifts meet the needs of the community is a large part of growing into adulthood, and I strongly believe that a large degree of happiness is found when a person finds this harmony.
