STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

KRISTA BILLERBECK

Describe your internship (where it was, why you chose it, what your daily duties included...).

This summer I worked at the River Alliance of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. The River Alliance is a non-profit that works to protect and restore Wisconsin's rivers by working with local river and watershed groups and advocating for state and local policies. This involves dam removal, water quality monitoring, raising consciousness, holding trainings for citizens, and promoting relevant policies. My duties throughout the summer varied greatly and took place both in the office and out. Some of my jobs included updating information on local river and watershed groups, membership renewals, contacting participants in an auction fundraiser, taking photos and writing for the newsletter, doing preliminary monitoring of aquatic invasive species on various rivers, and compiling information and maps on dam removals.

Describe your greatest challenge as an intern this summer and how you adapted to meet or overcome it.

One challenge throughout this internship was adapting to an office environment. Before this experience I had never worked in this type of setting, and had to adjust to the feeling of being the only intern in an office of experienced adults. I tried to take this positively by hearing what they all had to offer, and was able to learn about this type of work environment as well as the people who composed it.

How did your experience in this internship affect your goals for future career or educational experiences?

This experience gave me insight into the workings of the non-profit world. I learned the technicalities and inner-workings that are common to many organizations like the River Alliance. Now when I consider a career in a non-profit I have a more realistic view of what that entails. I also became aware of the graduate programs that are available specific to this sector, such as in non-profit management.
