Student Spotlight on
Academic Internships

This week we decided to highlight four Oles who are doing interesting experiential learning over interim: Anna Messerly, Madeline Salmon, Rachel Bean, and Bethany Birkelo. For more information on how to do an internship for academic credit, stop by the CEL!

Anna Messerly: Physical Therapy
Over interim, I'm participating in a physical therapy internship through the Center for Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northfield Hospital and at a brand new sports rehab center in Lakeville.  In addition to spending time shadowing physical and occupational therapists each day, I'll also have the chance to meet with speech and pediatric therapists, and observe orthopedic surgeries.  Not only will I be interacting with other therapists, but also with patients.  This internship is perfect for me because I'm planning on pursuing a career in physical therapy, and hopefully focus on either athletes or kids, two groups of people I love working with!

Madeline Salmon: Oceanography
I will be in Hawaii on the island of Maui for Interim. I will be studying humpback whales at the Ocean Mammal Institute, a small nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of ocean mammals and the preservation of species. I will be working with a small group to observe these animals in the wild for several hours every day for two and a half weeks. I love the ocean and plan to have some sort of career involving marine biology, so this internship will be a wonderful opportunity for me to determine where exactly my interests lie, and this type of research may be precisely what I want to do with my life in the future.

Rachel Bean and Bethany Birkelo: Public Health in Zambia
We are headed to Livingstone, Zambia, with a program called African
Impact. Our days will be split between working in a Maramba clinic
assisting nurses and doctors, and volunteering with different community projects in the area. We will be doing things like taking vital signs and weighing babies, but also assisting with home-based care for those who are unable to get to the clinic, doing activities at an orphanage, repairing classrooms, and more. Bethany is planning on becoming a physician specializing in infectious disease or international health so she is looking forward to getting the chance to work in a clinic setting in a developing country like Zambia. I am eventually headed for my Master's in Public Health and Social Work, with an emphasis in global/international health as well so I am also looking forward to the health-related themes of this project in addition to getting to see how non-profit organizations work in Livingstone. We both have spent semesters in Africa before, Bethany in Ghana and me in Tanzania, so are both also looking forward to returning to the wonderful continent.
