Student Spotlight on
Senior Job Searching:
Matthew Norman
As a senior, what are you thinking about doing next year?
I'm a psychology major, so I'm really interested in applying what I've learned in psychology to find a job that focuses on human interactions. Being a people person by nature, I'm looking for a job that involves a lot of human interaction, more than just crunching numbers.
How is the CEL helping you search for job opportunities?
The CEL has showed me how to peruse the Internet searching for job openings. I'm also trying to network with alums using the St. Olaf Online Alumni Directory, which has been an incredible resource. The CEL has tips on how to contact alums. I also did a practice interview with Kirsten Cahoon, which really helped me form good answers to questions I might be asked and present myself in a professional way. The CEL is an essential resource that helps me figure out and de-stress about the future.
Which companies have you turned in applications for?
Target, mainly. I'm mostly using the online alumni directory and have been searching Web sites of companies for job postings.
Do you have any advice to give as senior, to your underclassmen Oles?
Begin early! Contact people through the Alumni Directory. Get involved with activities that can help you get ideas about your future career. And most of all, be patient and resilient, even in the face of rejection.
