Student Spotlight on
a Rhodes Scholar:
Nicole Novak

How did the CEL help you through the application process?
I stopped by the CEL in September to make sure I was on the right track with my CV--Kevin Friede was really encouraging and gave me some good formatting and phrasing advice. Once I knew I had been accepted to interview, I also arranged a few practice interviews with Kirsten Cahoon. I hadn't done many formal interviews before, so she helped me know what to expect and helped me work through a few bad habits like saying "um" too much.
How did you prepare for the interview(s)?
I looked over my application and tried to anticipate questions the committee might ask me, but I also realized that I couldn't predict much--there are lots of legends about the off-the-wall questions people have gotten at Rhodes interviews! Mostly, I just thought a lot about the values and experiences that drive me. I read through old papers and journal entries and I tried to have those things fresh in my mind so that I could call on them to respond to whatever questions arose.
I also had a mock interview with a faculty committee on campus, which was very helpful, and Ishanaa and I got together a few times to talk about current events and calm our nerves a little bit!
What was your hardest interview question?
There were a few questions I didn't know the answer to, and I just explained that I didn't know. The most challenging question I got was a hypothetical one. One of the committee members told me about a dilemma his university had faced, involving a pharmaceutical company's donation of medications that were to be distributed by morally questionable means in West Africa. He asked me what I would do if I were the university president, and why. My first answer to the question didn't really satisfy him, so he made me try again!
What will you be studying next year, and what are you looking forward to most?
I'm hoping to pursue two one-year master's degrees: Medical Anthropology and Global Health Science. Global Health Science is an interdisciplinary program that surveys the main issues surrounding health in developing countries. I'm looking forward to studying issues I care deeply about with classmates from all over the world. I'm also excited because the third term of the Global Health Science program is a research placement abroad (hopefully in Latin America for me).
