Are you interested in learning more about microfinancing?
As the Microfinancing Week 2007 comes to a close, continue the discussion by picking up Asif Dowla and Dipal Barua’s book The Poor Always Pay Back. This book is an introduction to Grameen II, an improved version of the classical Grameen model that is currently being used to financially empower the poorest families across the globe through savings and loans. The success of microcredit movement has proved the credit worthiness of the poor beyond question. Grameen II shows that the poor, if given the opportunity, will save a great deal and will always pay back.

Job Humor

An applicant was being interviewed for admission to a prominent medical school.
"Tell me," inquired the interviewer, "Where do you expect to be ten years from now?"
"Well, let's see," replied the student. "It's Wednesday afternoon. I guess I'll be on the golf course by now."

Student Spotlight on
Fulbright Scholarships:
Emilie Midtling

What's the Fulbright application like? How do you get started?
The Fulbright process begins with an informational session which is held every spring for juniors and seniors. Most applicants then use summer break to think about their interests, about what country and culture they would like to learn from, and about what questions they wish to explore. I began to draft my proposal and personal statement and to learn more about the country I was applying to when I returned to campus. Faculty on the Fulbright Committee meet with students every week to offer suggestions and help throughout the application process. The Fulbright application requires commitment to your project- you have to write and rewrite- but it is a great experience. You learn how to draft grants and meet many dedicated faculty who would like to see your proposal succeed.
What is your tentative project?
I hope to join Dr. Stefan Schreiber's research team at Christian-Albrechts-University, Kiel, Germany, which has recently identified the genes involved in susceptibility to Crohn's disease. We would use genetically modified mouse models to examine biochemical pathways in disease initiation which could be therapeutic targets.
What kind of faculty support have you gotten along the way?
I received much help, feedback, and editing advice from faculty on the Fulbright Committee. Professors Walter and Freedberg in the biology department helped me to shape the science portions of my proposal. Professors Zempel and Dalgaard offered many suggestions in addition to guidance on the logistics of the application process.
Do you have any recommendations for students thinking about applying
for post-graduate scholarships?
Search widely for opportunities and identify mentors in your field of interest. Look for scholarships or grants that would allow you to be enthusiastic about the project you propose to join.
Do you have a Plan B?
I have applied to MD and MD/PhD schools. I will also be applying for an independent faculty grant offered by Christian-Albrechts-University if my Fulbright proposal is not chosen this year.
