Peer Advisor Weekly Words of Wisdom

"Many science majors think that internships aren't for them ... think again! There are literally hundreds of research positions available for undergraduates each summer -- these can count as academic internships through the CEL or non-credit internships, and are an important component of your resume as you apply for jobs, grad schools, and medical schools. Be sure to check back soon to see the 'Undergraduate Research' resource page that the CEL is currently developing -- application deadlines for most programs are in January, February, and March!"
-Kevin Friede '08, Peer Advisor

Student Spotlight on
Finstad Grants:
Will Voorhees

Too cold to venture outside for a movie? Check out Will's cool DormDVDs program at http://www.dormdvds.com...and cozy up with some new movies this winter!
Why did you choose to apply for a Finstad Grant?
I chose to apply for a Finstad Grant because it's a fantastic oppertunity to start a business without taking on the financial risks yourself. In addition to funding, the Finstad Grant program provides advice and help to get your idea off the ground.
What is your project?
My project is DormDVDs.com a Website where students can share their DVDs. You can search for the thousands of movies already registered and contact fellow Oles to borrow them.
What has been the best part of your experience?
The best part of my experience is hearing about people using the service to find movies that they wouldn't have been otherwise able to watch.
What has been the most challenging part of your experience?
Time. Developing and maintaining an interactive Website takes a substantial amount time that is sometimes hard to find in between classes and social life.
Do you have any advice for people interested in getting a Finstad Grant?
Schedule a meeting with the people at the CEL right away; it can take a while to get things up and running, so you best start soon!
How do you see this experience being useful for your post-St. Olaf life?
I've learned an incredible amount of software development skills in addition to the entrepreneurship and business related things I've learned. After I graduate I'm sure that these skills will be invaluable to me!
