Student Spotlight on
the Mayo Interns:
Cullen O'Neill, Hannah Clark,
Kristina Stoermer, Erik Brekke

What is the Mayo Scholars Program?
St. Olaf started doing the Mayo Scholars Program last year. Mayo created the program to research medical products and determine their advantages and disadvantages, and ultimately, if Mayo should use the product.
How did you learn about and apply for the project?
We learned about the program through the CEL and through our advisors. We came in and had our resumes looked at and got valuable information about how to write a cover letter. We applied through the CEL at the end of October.
What is your project?
Our group is looking at mallet finger injuries, and we're evaluating new splints for the injury. We're trying to asses all of the different splints on the market and eventually we'll make a recommendation as to which device Mayo should endorse and use. At the end of interim, we're giving a formal presentation to the board of representatives at Mayo Medical Center, along with the 6 or 7 other groups who've been doing similar research at other schools.
This project not only involves scientific research, but is also teaching us the entrepreneurial aspects of inventing new products. It has been important to see how a new idea generates support and finds its niche in the marketplace. Mayo gets at least one new patent per day, but these new ideas can't be looked at because of a lack of time and resources to make accurate assessments about the products.
How has the CEL been involved in the project?
We've been using the Online Alumni Directory a lot to make contacts with various professionals in the field of medicine: biomedical technology. We've primarily been using it to contact physicians who've graduated from St. Olaf. Ole alums are generally very supportive and helpful in our endeavors. They always enjoy hearing from current students; and they're always very hepful and nice! We contact physians to ask them about how they treat mallet finger injuries, and ask for suggestions about any recommendations they'd have for a new product design.
Pat Smith (CEL Director was an important link who connected us with the MBA project manager at St. Thomas who supervises us. (We're also working with Kevin Crisp in the Bio department; he is our project advisor). In addition, the CEL has set us up with laptops, telephones, classroom space, and helped with other logistics of the project.
Do you have any advice for students interested in doing the Mayo Scholars Program next year?
Even if you're not interested specifically in medical studies, this program is wonderful experience and a great resume builder. No matter what your interests, this is a great experience to learn how to market and build a business plan. Anyone with interests in economics, physics, math, biology, and chemistry should consider applying; it's a valuable experience for any of those fields. We'd definitely recommend that students consider the Mayo Scholars program for next interim!
