Discerning Your Vocation
Interim is a great time to slow down and ponder that word that's thrown around our campus so often: vocation. Parker Palmer's book Let Your Life Speak is a thoughtful exploration of new ways to think about vocation. A slim book, this quick read would be great for an afternoon when you find yourself with a couple of free hours. Check it out in the CEL library!

Student Spotlight on
Alec Johnson

Alec is a great example of someone who reaped the benefits of coming into the CEL early in his St. Olaf years. Want to come in to the CEL but aren't quite sure where to start? Keep your eyes peeled for our upcoming "Focus on First Years" events!

When was the first time you came into the CEL? Why?
I came into the CEL the summer before my freshman year. I had quite a bit of anxiety about what major to pick. At that time, I was under the impression that picking a major was a fixed and determined action that would affect your job and the rest of you life. I obviously felt that this was an important decision!

Have you decided on a major? How did the CEL help you through that process?
I am now an English major with a Media Studies concentration. I think the CEL helped me with the Strong Inventories. Although the results were not exact professions I might pursue, they helped me realize my strengths (an aptly named assessment!).

You've been in the St. Olaf news lately - congratulations! Tell us a little about the Apple film contest.
Yes! My good friends and I entered the Apple Insomnia Film Contest to test our skills as filmmakers. For the festival, each group is required to create a 3-minute film in 24 straight hours while fulfilling certain cinematic elements. Overall, we placed 18th out of 2000 other groups. My responsibility was sound and music composer. Soon, our movie, along with the other Top 25 movies will be featured on the iTunes Music Store.

What was your summer internship and how did you like it?
Well, I didn't intern anywhere, but I worked (and still do) at a company in Plymouth, MN, called AtomicDeals. Based almost entirely on the web, they sell some pretty nifty items for really low prices. I make podcasts, and advertise for them. You can find those at Atomicbroadcasting.com

Any advice for advice for first-year students?
St. Olaf is so incredibly awesome that anything you choose to do here will inevitably bring you success. Don't worry too much about picking a major. It will pick you.
