Peer Advisor Weekly Words of Wisdom

"As a sophomore, I attended the MN Private College Job and Internship fair to get a few ideas on possible opportunities for the summer.  To prepare for the fair, I researched the companies that interested me most and spent a few hours online familiarizing myself with each company’s mission, core values, strategy and products. I also got my resume up to date by meeting with peer advisors and counselors in the CEL.  My junior year, I landed a great internship with Best Buy, where I will be working full-time after graduation!  Even if you have no idea what kind of internship or job you want, the Job and Internship fair is a great launching pad to spark ideas and interests, plus it’s a good opportunity to network with HR recruiters from fabulous Minnesota companies that are looking for liberal arts grads just like you!"

Student Spotlight on
Becca Koch

What did you do this past summer?
I worked at Securian in their Management Development internship program. After a week of training in the Management Services area, each intern was placed on a specific project based on their interests and the business need. I worked as part of the Annuity Marketing team. My main project was to assist in the design of a new website to merge two of the company's product lines. The project involved leading many meetings with marketing directors and also working on a cross-functional team. In the end, I complied documents that outlined every decision made on the site, and these documents allowed the stakeholders to sign off on the project and make sure everyone was on the same page.

How did you find out about this opportunity?
I found out about this opportunity while researching prior to attending the Minnesota Private Colleges Job and Internship Fair. I had also heard about the opportunity from staff members of the CEL. I learned more about the program by talking with representatives from Securian at the Fair, which made me realize that the internship would be a good fit.

What did you learn about yourself through this experience?  What was the most challenging?
I learned the importance of trying something new. I had no idea about anything technology related when first starting the internship, yet I was thrown right into that world my second week on the job. I was very nervous about understanding their lingo, but by the end of the summer, I was able to fully understand what they were talking about during meetings. I also learned the importance of not being afraid to ask questions. The most challenging part was that my project was very ambiguous and I was given tasks that I knew nothing about. I learned early on that you must ask questions, because there were so many people willing to help and wanting me to succeed.

Which CEL services have you used in your years at St. Olaf?
The CEL has been very helpful the past four years. I have attended many of the workshops, such as resume writing and interviewing skills. I have been in the CEL many times to get help with writing my resume and to get advice on different career options. I have also done a few practice interviews in the CEL. It is not always fun watching the tape at the end, but it is a very helpful service that I recommend anyone that has an upcoming interview to utilize!

What are your plans for after graduation?
I am going to move up to the cities and work for General Mills as a Financial Analyst. I am very excited for the opportunity.

Any advice to your peers, both to underclassmen and your fellow seniors?
Utilize the resources that are provided at St. Olaf. St. Olaf has great connections, so be sure to use them! I also recommend looking on the Ole Alumni Directory to find people who work in your field of interest. They are more then happy to answer your questions. Plus, this helps to build your networking skills, which is something that can be awkward for some to do, but is very important.
