Student Spotlight on
David Sayre:

Northfield Enterprise Center (NEC) Internship

What is the Northfield Enterprise Center (NEC)?
The NEC is a small nonprofit organization, in partnership with the Economic Development Authority (EDA), that works with area businesses and organizations to assist in making them successful.  We work in various capacities like performing market research, writing marketing and business plans, PR development, and many other business activities. The College Board of Business Consultants is a subdivision of the organization that pairs knowledgeable, experienced college students with requesting businesses.

What did the internship entail?
In the past few months I have had two unique opportunities.  I worked with one local business on developing and designing a new website. The project required me to do a great deal of market research and analysis of their existing work.  As the site was launched, I was given the opportunity to develop a PR rollout strategy and execute on it.

Additionally, I am currently working on a project with another local business on developing a new pricing strategy.

What did you like most about the internship?
Many great opportunities have come out of this internship, but the thing I've liked most is being given the chance to "get my hands dirty" with the various business activities I hadn't yet applied in a real life setting.  It has been rewarding to see how my accomplishments have helped the organizations prosper.

This internship is taking applications right now! Any advice for fellow Oles interested in this opportunity?
I would certainly suggest that students strongly consider this internship for the coming year.  One mustn't be discouraged by its year-long length, but rather focus on the experience that could be had from the internship.  St. Olaf students are lucky to have such a unique opportunity.

Oles, if this internship sounds like it'd be a good fit for you, check out the CEL's new entrepreneurial internship website at the Entrepreneurship Virtual Fair. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Sian Muir (muir) or Sandy Malecha (malecha) at the CEL today!
