Peer Advisor Weekly Words of Wisdom

"Great, so you got that resume and cover letter done, but you still have the interview. It may seem daunting that over 95% of employers hire on the basis of a personal interview and many questions are open ended like 'tell me about yourself.' Luckily, the CEL has your back and you can come in to either pick up handouts for interview techniques or participate in a practice interview with one of the CEL staff members. You don't have to be a natural speaker to nail that interview!”

Student Spotlight on
Amanda Carter:
The Northfield Reads and Counts Program
What is the Northfield Reads and Counts program?
The Northfield Reads and Counts is a rewarding program that provides a unique opportunity for the youth of Northfield to connect with college-age adults. When listening to a child read or helping them with their math, you are not simply being a tutor, but a mentor. Sometimes a little attention and inspiration goes a long way —and I am not just talking about the children.
Does this program pertain to your major ?
I am an art history and studio art double major—not education. Surprised? I don’t think of the ways the Northfield Reads and Counts program pertains to my major, but more about how it pertains to my life, my goals, and my happiness. Often, too often perhaps, I strive for perfection and quick results. However, working with children teaches me the virtue of patience and how over time, when given attention and encouragement, a struggle may turn into a success. In many ways, the children help me more than I help them. They have opened my eyes to a brighter more fulfilled way of life. However, I must note, this world may come with marker-covered hands and cookie-covered faces, but without a doubt, it always comes with a smile.
If someone was interested in learning more and getting involved, how would they go about doing that?
Contact the wonderful and organized Diana Dargen to get started. If you are wondering if it would work with your schedule, check out the current tutoring needs at: http://www.stolaf.edu/services/cel/readscounts/Tutor_Request.html
