INTERNSHIPS
Application Deadline: Friday, March 27 — Arts Alive Media is a non-profit organization with the purpose to empower young women in their creative, educational, and professional pursuits. This organization publishes Alive Magazine, an online publication, which offers youth to share their life experiences in creative mediums. Interns have a high level of responsibility toward organizational goals, as they serve as short-term staff members. Women ages 25 and under are eligible to apply. Internships are specialized according to individual interests and are available in the following departments: Public Relations, Development, Editorial, Web Development and Graphic Design. Application Deadline: Friday, April 3— Spend the summer in Northfield working with area businesses. As an intern with the NEC, many projects will be involved. Assist in consulting and advising local businesses on business and financial plan development. Become involved in marketing and promotion planning to update NEC’s business and marketing resources, including website management. Work hands on with the NEC Executive Director, local business owners and entrepreneurs. This internship will also collaborate with the Northfield Chamber of Commerce, the Northfield Downtown Development Corporation, and the City of Northfield’s Economic Development Authority. Qualifications include: Junior or Senior status, strong research and analytical skills, ability to work independently and self-start, quick learner, ability to interact well with people and an understanding of the business and entrepreneurial environment. Application Deadline: Wednesday, April 8— This one-year program connects motivated St. Olaf and Carleton students to local businesses for short projects studying, researching and solving real world business problems. Projects are categorized under marketing research, developing market plans and developing start-up business plans. Businesses will be paired with student’s interest areas. Participants will have the chance to network with business people and build a transferable resume. In addition, the experience will allow for applying education to an experience that benefits the community. The time commitment is 3 hours per week, on average, in addition to 6 hour-long meetings divided between fall and spring. Applicants should be articulate self-starters with strong presentation, computer, writing and listening skills. Those with bilingual skills are a plus. Application Deadline: Monday, May 4— Work with an organization dedicated to advancing the art of printmaking by providing educational programs, community access, collaborative publishing opportunities and public engagement to increase awareness and understanding. The Art Education Internship offers the opportunity to work with the Executive Director and Education and Community Programs Coordinator to present classes to school age children and the community as a whole. Duties include: assisting with day-to-day preparations for class, class instruction for students ages 8-18, oversee the safety of the shop, order inventory, create art examples and research projects, assist with visiting teachers and community events, and generally promote the art of printmaking. The time commitment consists of 12 weeks for 8-10 hours per week. Printmaking experience is helpful for applicants, but not necessary as dependability, experience working with youth, initiative, ability to learn, and an interest in printmaking are crucial. Application Deadline: Friday, June 8— Looking for an independent study for J-Term next year? This internship is for January 2010 and will allow interns to combine conservation biology and ecopsychology to study extinction prevention. Because this internship is considered a course, reading articles and class discussion will be a part of nightly activities, highlighted with essays, a research paper and final exam. Daily activities include the observation and data collection of the biology and behavior of humpback whales. This data collection from shore will allow students to explore the process of field research design and data analysis. Students will learn about current issues facing sea mammals, the politics of protecting endangered species, and the detailed intricacies of human relationships with the natural world. A fully furnished apartment with other research interns will be provided. Begin thinking about next year early and contact Joyce O’Neal with any questions about the program.

CAREERS
Application Deadline: Sunday, May 31— As a Claims Services Representative, the primary responsibility is to investigate by putting pieces together, evaluate and resolve claims to satisfy both the claimant and the Company. Applicants must have tact and patience. In addition, one must understand insurance contracts and be aware of which losses, damages and injuries are covered under policy. The Company will provide an extensive hands-on and classroom training program to provide a detailed background in insurance concepts, product knowledge and risk management. Applicants should hold a degree in a business related field with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Experience in business, as well as excellent communication, negotiation and customer service skills are requested.

Wednesday, April 1, 3:30-7:30 pm, University of Minnesota, Continuing Education & Conference Center, St. Paul— Pathways to Communication Careers is a great opportunity to learn about communications careers and meet alumni from St. Olaf and the Minnesota Private Colleges. Select and attend two breakout session topics, each consisting of 5 professionals working in communications. Topics include Advertising/Marketing, Broadcast Journalism (TV & Radio), Public Relations/Corporate Communications, and Publishing/Print & Electronic Media. A networking reception will allow students to grab something to eat and interact with other students and professionals. Transportation is now being provided for those who need it.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Application Deadline: April 3, 2009— The Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (MN SPJ) is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its 2009 student scholarship. This year, MN SPJ will award two $1,000 scholarships to students pursuing a career in journalism. Applications are available on the Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists Web site. For more information, contact board member Amanda Theisen.
Application Deadline: April 1, 2009— Want funds for overseas study post-graduation? The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship provides for study abroad in one of the 162 countries where Rotary clubs are located and is designed to further international understanding and goodwill. Some 1,200 scholarships will be available from Rotary Clubs worldwide. This scholarship is worth up to $23,000. The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship is one-year in length. Applicants must be available for interviews in Northfield on April 6-7 and must be available for district interviews on Saturday, April 25, 2009. These awards are for the 2010-2011 academic year.

PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS
Leaning how best to break into your field of interest can be challenge. Make use of professional organizations and associations to learn about current trends in the field and new career opportunities. Professional associations and societies often operate Web-sites featuring job boards, resume banks or discussion forums for networking. WEDDLE's Association Directory is specially designed to help you find those association sites. It lists several thousand associations from around the world by their primary professional/occupational focus and/or industry of interest and provides a link to the Web-site they operate.
It may not be comfortable, but at least it looks cool.
