Student Spotlight on
The Melvin George Scholarship:

Carl Samuelson

Where and what was your summer internship?
I worked with Congregations Caring for Creation (C3).  C3 is an interfaith group that works organizing congregations around environmental action.  I worked in St. Paul, and was housed in the Alliance for Sustainability, so I did some extra work for them too.  I spent the summer doing three main things.  One, I planned, organized, and staffed a booth in the Eco Experience Building at the MN state fair.  Working with a dozen key volunteers and probably 40 additional volunteers, we educated fairgoers about energy efficient lighting, got them to take the MN energy challenge, and sign their congregation up for C3.  Two, I called our members, helped answer questions, guide individuals interested in starting action in their congregation, and trained denominational leaders.  Finally, C3 was going through a process of incorporation and setting out on its own, so I participated in the long range planning process, which was a really unusual experience for an intern.

How did you find out about this internship?
I first found out about the CEL's scholarships.  I read the criteria for the Melvin George scholarship and decided that I could find an organization that would fit those criteria and be willing to have free labor (this is something that unites the entire non-profit world, they all LOVE free labor).  So, I cold-called a number of organizations that I was familiar with, and the Alliance for Sustainability responded immediately to me and very enthusiastically.  After talking things over with them, they suggested the C3 would need an intern and have lots of exciting things going on this summer, so I agreed to work with C3.  Working with a religious organization was not something I had initially desired, but it proved to be a very fantastic experience and community.

What was something that you learned about yourself or your future
career plans through this job?

Working with C3 was the first step to discovering what I want to do for a large part of my life (I'm not willing yet to say the rest of my life).  Organizing around the environment was a really rewarding experience and the friends and contacts I made were awesome.  I just finished another internship with the Lutheran Coalition for Public Policy in Minnesota, which I got based on contacts I made last summer.  At the end of my internship with LCPPM, I was asked to sit on the Policy Council (aka board of directors) for the organization--so thats been very neat to stay connected to an organization I care so much about.  I believed and still do that Global Warming and Environmental issues are the most pressing of our generation (especially due to their interconnected nature) and I have decided to dedicate the first part of my career life to those causes.  In the same token, I was just hired by the Green Corps to be trained to be an environmental organizer.  I'm very excited, this opportunity was very selective and I'm comfortable saying that my internships (and in turn the Melvin George Scholarship) made it possible for me to get this job.

How did the CEL help you fund this experience?
The Melvin George Scholarship.  Plus, after sending a thank you note to Mel himself, we got in touch, and last January I went out to lunch with him.  He was as generous and kind in person as his scholarship made me imagine.

If you've got summer plans but you need help with funding, consider applying for one of the CEL's summer scholarships! The deadline for the Melvin George Scholarship is approaching fast. Find the application for summer scholarships here.
