JENNIFER KRAMM
PHILLIPS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
How did you first get involved with the Northfield Reads and Counts Program?
My first year I volunteered as a tutor through the Northfield Reads and Counts program working one-on-one with students. I learned about the after-school program called the MSYC, and volunteered there as well. I noticed an opening for work-study employment at the MYSC and Diana Dargen from the CEL enrolled me, allowing me to work where I had already gained volunteer experience.
What was something valuable that you learned as a part of the program?
I appreciate volunteering as a mutually advantageous experience. I have been touched by the stories and perseverance I have learned from students, have been inspired by dedicated adults, and am confident that when you invest your time, your heart benefits as well.
How did your experience here lead to you applying for the Phillips Scholarship?
As I was working at the Middle School Youth center this January, I noticed puzzle pieces that fit together. Seeing a need in the summer for youth programming and identifying an opportunity to fulfill that need, I applied for the Phillips Scholarship. I am grateful for the services and staff that helped me during the proposal writing process. Overall, St. Olaf offers the tools for success. I identified the opportunity through an informational session advertised through the celyourself alias, set up a meeting with a staff member from the CEL to bounce around ideas, and consulted the ASC’s writing place for a second, a third, and a fourth eye on my writing.
Does this connect to your future plans?
Yes, my experience at the middle school supplements my pending education licensure. Long term, I aspire to manage a non-profit that supports the Latino immigrant population. If St. Olaf course offerings do not directly align with your professional ambition extra-curricular activities can fill in the gap while providing a hands-on opportunity to prepare for your career and serve with a mission.
