STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

SARAH MEYER

Tell us a little bit about experiential learning opportunities you've pursued while at St. Olaf.
At St. Olaf, I did two independent studies. During one I researched the economics of the Northfield Retirement Community; through the other I explored models of Christian community and involved service learning projects at the Laura Baker facility for people with disabilities. I also had the opportunity to study abroad on Term in the Middle East, and through the interim program Religion and Culture in Rome.  Lastly, the past three summers the Lilly Grant Program has made it financially possible for me to serve as a camp counselor.

How have these experiences shaped your career goals?
During my first summer at camp — to my surprise — I ended up spending the entirety of the time doing day camps at a residence facility for people with disabilities. It was here that I first experienced the longed-for match of my passions and my skills — St. Olaf likes to call this vocation. Through experiential learning opportunities, I have since had the opportunity to explore theoretical frameworks of care, community, and public policy. This exploration has been absolutely key to pinpointing my own area of interest.

What are your post-graduate plans?
After spending the summer home in rural Nebraska, I will head off to the big city, and begin graduate school at NYU in Occupational Therapy.

How has the CEL helped you along the way?
If the CEL had a cheek I would kiss it.
I would not be going to graduate school next year were it not for the CEL.  It was work at camp, done through the Lilly grant, that first introduced me to my vocation and later put me to work alongside occupational therapists. Further experiences have allowed me to explore my area of interest not only outside the classroom but through the classroom.
When it came down to applying to grad school, the resources, coaching, and simple encouragement that I received there gave me the how-to and the gumption to pursue the application process.
