"As this school year wraps up, I challenge you to soak up all you can from your summer experience. Yes, this does sound cliché, but it is a great idea to establish prior to an experience what you want to gain or learn. Jot down a few goals and throughout the summer, re-evaluate those goals. Many people journal or blog to track their experiences and it gives them something to look back on for either sentimental reasons or as a handy tool for writing a résumé . Summertime is the primetime for experiential learning. To help you synthesize your experience, the CEL is open to you. With that said, I hope you have a wonderful summer and good luck on finals!"
-Natalie Neal, '10, Editor and PA
TRENT CHAFFEE
What are you studying and do you have any specific career plans?
I am a junior majoring in American studies with concentrations in media and management studies. My dream job is to take over Rick Nelson’s position as restaurant critic for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, but until he leaves I am pursuing a career in public relations, marketing, or communications. I hope to work for a few years and have the company I’m working for assist with the payment of my graduate school, law school, or MBA program.
What sort of experiential opportunities have you pursued because of your interest in communications?
For three years I have been a student reporter in the St. Olaf College Marketing-Communications Department. I write features, short stories, and press releases for the St. Olaf magazine and web site, and assist with other communications and public relations projects. This Interim I Interned at Target Corporation as a Business Analyst in their merchandising division. Last summer I worked in downtown Minneapolis as a Communications Intern for Wells Fargo in their Corporate Communications department, where I wrote features and short stories for their employee magazine and web site, and updated daily web content. That position also gave me the opportunity to have several information interviews and fantastic lunches with Wells Fargo communicators from different business lines. Last year I completed a marketing project for a St. Olaf alumnus through Sian Muir’s New Venture Formulation class, and won the Target Case Challenge.
What are your plans for the summer?
I am fortunate to be returning to Wells Fargo as a Community Relations Intern in their Community Development and Specialized Lending division. I will be participating and leading the project planning, research, communications, and execution of various Wells Fargo community involvement initiatives, including the Twin Cities Community Support/United Way Campaign, Habitat for Humanity, and A Brush with Kindness.
Any advice for fellow students?
Employers are interested in more than what you do in your classes and on campus. Internships and experiential learning are crucial to building a strong résumé and reaching your goals. The CEL is an invaluable resource to not only find opportunities that fit you but to also make them worthwhile. They can help you every step of the way.
Also, pay attention to the various CEL updates. Better yet, visit the CEL and introduce yourself to Sandy Malecha, Kirsten Cahoon, Sian Muir and Andrea Kubinski. My St Olaf experience has been enriched by these helpful ladies.
