STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

SAMANTHA MEHROTRA

What was your internship? Tell us a little bit about how you found it and what the application process was like.

My summer internship was with "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams." Since my primary interest has always been in national news, Nightly News presented a great opportunity to learn how a national newscast is developed and produced. It was also an excellent way to build upon my previous experiences in the field.

Prior to working at Nightly, I had worked for NBC out of Washington, D.C.  In addition to contacts, I also applied online. Eventually, I was able to connect with their program manager.

What are your career goals, and how do you think this internship will shape the trajectory of your professional future?

This internship confirmed my decision to enter this field. While I'm still deciding between producing and on-air reporting, this internship has given me a strong idea of the type of stories I would like to cover—either national politics or the environment.

What was the most interesting thing you did in your internship?

I think the best part of the internship was simply being involved in the process, and to see how a news story is developed from start to finish. In the end, it really makes you appreciate the effort behind-the-scenes.

St. Olaf does not offer many courses that are specifically geared towards broadcast journalism; did this pose any challenges for you? How did your liberal arts background help you?

It has definitely posed some challenges. Because St. Olaf doesn't have a journalism curriculum, I think a student interested in this field has to be more aggressive in pursuing experiential opportunities where they can receive specialized training.

My liberal arts background has definitely been an asset. St. Olaf's coursework cultivates excellent writing and research skills—both of which are essential to being successful in the news business.
