New in the CEL library:
What Color Is Your Parachute?

Author Richard Bolles says his years as a minister helped him deliver a message that needed to be heard when the book first came out more than 35 years ago.
In What Color Is Your Parachute 2005, Bolles offers a completely new book for the uncertain job market, laying out a simple, step-by-step plan for finding meaningful work and mission. Featuring fresh explanations of old concepts and the introduction of new ideas, Bolles defines the distinctions between "resume jobs" and "grapevine jobs," between "passive job-hunting" and "active job-hunting," between "weak ties" and "strong ties," and much more.

Target Internship: Peter Hill

What did you do this past summer?
I worked at Target Headquarters as a merchandising intern. My project was to analyze advertising effectiveness for the Boys' divisions. I looked at ways to optimize percentage of stores in stock, ad profitability, and the ad forecasting process.

How did you find out about this opportunity?
It just sort of worked out -- I'm really interested in brand marketing, so I subscribe to a creative magazine called Communication Arts. One month, they had an exhibit on Target's innovation, and I decided it was really a company I wanted to work for. Around the same time, I met an alum at a math symposium and started learning about the internship program. I went through the on-campus interview process and got the offer as I was driving home for Spring Break. I've interned there for two summers.

What did you learn about yourself through this experience?
I gleaned a lot of confidence in my ability to work well in a variety of different settings. At first I thought that it would be very difficult for a nerdy Ole (I was an English/Econ double major and Great Conner at the time) to assimilate in a corporate office. Over time, I learned how to let my quirks show while still being part of the team's fabric.

What are you doing right now to further your career development?
I'm trying to figure out God's calling for me after graduation. Practically, this means having the courage to identify my goals and talents, and learning about different career paths from people who have traveled them. Of course, I'm not forgetting about writing a persuasive cover letter and resume, and applying to companies that interest me.

Which CEL services have you used in your years at St. Olaf?
Everything -- workshops, probably a dozen resume consultations, cover letter help, mock interviews.

What are your plans for next year?

Good question. This decision is an important one for me because there are both personal and professional factors that will affect my decision. All I can say is that I am weighing a couple of possible options.

Any advice to your peers, both to underclassmen and your fellow seniors?
Networking is important, but it sounds terrifying because those of us who are natural introverts feel intimated by people who have a natural knack for it. The important thing to realize is that networking is really "making friends in a professional context." It doesn't have to mean cold-calling the White House either. Look for the little opportunities to make connections and watch as they branch out-- I've met investment bankers, marketing researchers, consultants, ad agency account planners and brand managers just by asking.
