Caught Sleeping In Your Office Cubicle

Best excuses if you get caught sleeping in your office cubicle:

  • "It's okay: I'm still billing the client."

  • "They told me at the blood bank this might happen."

  • "This is just a 15-minute power nap like they raved about in that time-management course you sent me to."

  • "I was working smarter, not harder."

  • "Whew! I must a left the top off the liquid paper."

  • "I wasn't sleeping! I was meditating on the mission statement and envisioning a new paradigm!"

  • "This is one of the seven habits of highly effective people!"

  • "I was testing my keyboard for drool resistance."

  • "I'm actually doing a "Stress Level Elimination Exercise Plan" (SLEEP) I learned at the last management seminar you made me attend."

  • "Geez, I thought you were gone for the day."

Focus on First Years

Elizabeth Reynolds is a first-year student from Prairie Village, Kansas

What CEL services have you used this semester? How did you hear about the services?
This fall semester, I went to the “Choosing a Major” workshop and the 3-part “Identifying Vocational Interests” workshop, which included the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory tests. I also went in to have a one-on-one follow up appointment with a counselor in the CEL. I heard about these services from the CEL’s advertisement in the “Destination St. Olaf” binder that every first-year gets before they come to Olaf.

What aspect of these services was most helpful to you? Why?
I think that the one-on-one analysis was probably most helpful, because it has been difficult for me to narrow down my major and career interests. At this meeting, we successfully came up with a good list of careers and interests that I am excited to look into and potentially pursue!

What is one interesting thing you learned about yourself when you utilized the CEL resources?
Taking the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator test told me some interesting things about my leadership style and the way I think. My type analysis surprised me in a way when it said I had a “direct, decisive, and sometimes overbearing leadership style.” I didn’t realize I was this way, but looking back at my high school leadership positions, now I can see that this might indeed be true! This type indicator test really helped me to see my personality in a more comprehensive way than before.

What advice do you have for other first-year students?
For other first years, I would definitely recommend taking these two career assessments that I have mentioned. Even if you think you have your college years planned out, they can give you an objective perspective of yourself that could prove to be really helpful in the long run.

What is your favorite place to hang out on campus?
My favorite place to hang out on campus would have to be on Old Main hill when it is snowing and I can go sledding!
