 Lynnea Midland
Northfield Reads and Counts Tutoring Program
*St. Olaf and Carleton students have tutored over 500 youth in the Northfield Schools during the 2006-07 school year through the Northfield Reads and Counts program.
The Northfield Reads and Counts program is an off-campus work-study program in which students
utilize their work-study funding by tutoring in the Northfield Public Schools. The program is coordinated by an Americorps VISTA volunteer, Huy Bui.
The St Olaf tutors report that serving in the Northfield Public Schools is a great way to learn about education and the Northfield community. This is what Linnea Midland '10 has to say:
"I became a tutor because I thought it would be a great way to earn money for student work and, at the same time, being a part of children's learning
experience would be rewarding for me. I've worked with kids during the summer as well -- teaching swim lessons and counseling so I knew I could handle the job.
I am tutoring at Sibley elementary school and Greenvale elementary school.
College students rarely interact with people other than profs and other students and this gives me the opportunity to spend time and have fun with
the kids at the schools. They are full of energy and often put me in a good mood the moment I walk into a classroom because they really admire the older tutors there.
Patience is definitely something I've learned while working with the children whether it be if they can't read well or understand a math problem. There's always a few kids who misbehave and are
less likely to pay attention to you.
I have always considered teaching to be a possibility for a future career. I could see myself as an art teacher later on in life. I think this experience could be helpful to anyone since children are such an important part of our society. It's always good to interact with them especially if you were planning on having a family one day.
Thanks to all the St. Olaf tutors for your service this year!"
