The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

Part-time Internship Opportunity

Description: 
Campus liaison with the League of Women Voters providing a link between the campus and the local chapter of the League of Women Voters, a non-partisan, grassroots, volunteer organization and the third largest League in the state. Most of the activity associated with the internship will take place on campus, averaging 3-5 hours/week. Both male and female students are encouraged to apply.

Specific tasks for the campus liaison include:

  • Serve as the on-campus representative of LWV through communication and collaboration with various groups and organizations on campus including; the Political Action Committee, College Democrats, College Republicans, the Political Science Department and the Civic Engagement Program (CEL).
  • Collaborate with the Northfield LWV on planning and implementing a campus-community event about an issue of common interest.
  • Tabling on behalf of the Northfield LWV at least five hours over the course of the semester.
  • Implement other activities that promote informed and active participation in government, public policy and political advocacy.
  • Serve as an “official observer” of a local committee such as the Northfield School Board or the Northfield Economic Development Agency (optional)
Support:
  • The Civic Leadership Coordinator will be supported directly by both Mary Carlsen (Associate Professor of Social Work and Family Studies and member of the LWV) and Nate Jacobi (Associate Director, Civic Engagement in the Center for Experiential Learning).

Qualifications

  • Freshman, Sophomore or Junior with strong academic record
  • Desire and ability to promote active political participation at St. Olaf
  • Capacity to both work well independently and to collaborate effectively with LWV representatives and St. Olaf supporters

Compensation
The Northfield League is a non-profit organization that is big on action and modest in it's finances. The LWV would like to recognize the intern’s efforts with a $150.00 stipend (paid at the end of the internship).

Interested students should submit a resume and letter (maximum one page) outlining their leadership and political engagement interests and/or experiences and their ideas for completing the tasks itemized above. Please upload your resume and letter to OleRecruiting by Friday, May 8th by 10:30pm. Brief interviews will be held on campus on May 11 and 12.

1. Have your resume & letter ready to upload (peer advisors are available to help - M-F, 9-5).

2. Login to OleRecruiting via the directions on the left side of the screen.

3. Upload your resume under "Documents", "upload a document", "Resume". Upload your "letter", under "cover letter", also under "Documents", "upload a document.

4. Now, to apply for the internship, click on "Employers" on the gray bar, click "Employer Search", underneath "Employer Name", type "League of Women Voters", click "Search". Click on the number of jobs under the "Jobs" category in the middle of your screen. Click "PART-TIME INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY".

5. Read the description. When you get to the bottom of the screen, click on Apply. Next, you will be at a screen where you can select the resume and letter you want to use. Be sure to select both documents. Click "Submit".
