The Kloeck-Jenson Scholarship

for Peace
and Justice Internships

Description

The Kloeck-Jenson Scholarship for Peace and Justice Internships was created to honor the memory of Scott Kloeck-Jenson, his wife, Barbara, and their two children, Zoe and Noah; this scholarship was put into place to partially allay expenses for internships related to peace and social justice. It is meant to support and continue the courageous work to which Scott and Barbara dedicated their lives.

Students are strongly encouraged to pursue internships that will provide new and different experiences otherwise inaccessible to them in settings unfamiliar to them.

Applications for summer 2008 internships are due Tuesday, April 1, 2008.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Identified internship experience should further peace and social justice
  • Internship must follow Academic Internship guidelines
  • Must be currently enrolled as a St. Olaf student having completed at least one full year of college
  • A minimum GPA of 2.5 will normally be required
  • Preference will be given to students interning with a governmental or nonprofit NGO over students working for for-profit organizations
  • Note: Internships will typically occur during Interim or summer

Application

Scholarships will be given based on four primary criteria — the substance of the written proposal, evidence of sound preparation for the internship experience, general academic performance, and faculty support.

All items must be included for your application to be considered:

  • A one-page essay that includes the following:
    1. a description of the internship site;
    2. a description of supervision; and
    3. a description of how the internship relates to peace and justice issues - this should be the majority of your essay. Please provide a convincing argument as to the impact of your selected experience on your understanding of peace and justice issues. Should you choose to return to a site at which you've already worked, you must show how this internship experience will be different and/or enhanced.
  • An unofficial transcript
  • Your resume
  • A completed Academic Internship Learning Agreement and Plan
  • An Estimated Itemized Budget (does not cover tuition costs)
  • A recommendation from a St. Olaf College faculty member who will serve as your academic supervisor

Completed applications, with all supporting materials, must be submitted to Paula Schanilec in the Center for Experiential Learning - Modular Village around April 1 each year for a summer internship and during semester I each year for an Interim internship. (Applications for an Interim 2008 internship are due Nov. 1, 2007.) Questions regarding the Kloeck-Jenson program may be directed to Nate Jacobi, Assistant Director of Civic Engagement, x3268 or Kris Thalhammer, Associate Professor, Political Science, Department Chair, x3528.
