LILLY VOCATIONAL INTERN

The Lilly Vocational Intern position provides a concrete, coordinated opportunity for a graduating senior (class of 2010) or recent graduate (2009) to remain/return to St. Olaf for one year to hone his/her skills by working closely with the full array of vocational discernment programs with the Lilly Grant Program. The models for this position are the AmeriCorps and Lutheran Volunteer Corps programs that engage students in a year of service as they explore their career options. In addition to contributing to the work of the Lilly Grant Program, the intern will learn by doing, gaining insights and expertise that will contribute to his/her ability to respond to a calling to serve in the non-profit sector. This is a one year position, grant funded, recruited annually.

Katie graduated from St. Olaf with a major in American Studies and a concentration in Environmental Studies.  After graduation, her interest in learning about food and sustainable agriculture led her to enroll in an organic farming program at the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute.  As the Lilly Vocational Intern she enjoys helping students think about their vocation and working on programs that empower students to become leaders for change. This position has allowed her to participate in unique opportunities like working with the social innovation group OASIS and acting as an advisor in the Ideals to Action class. Whether organizing the Transforming Privilege Retreat, meeting with students to discuss post-graduate service opportunities, or reflecting on her vocation, Katie enjoys the fulfillment this position awards her.  Katie hopes to help develop sustainable local and regional food systems in the future.

Miriam Samuelson ’08
2008-2009 Intern

Miriam began her Lilly Vocational Internship after graduating from St. Olaf with majors in English, Social Justice Studies, and Women’s Studies.  “Working as a Lilly Vocational Intern has helped me set a solid intellectual, spiritual, and civic foundation on which I can build the rest of my professional and personal aspirations,” she says.  Miriam worked with Career Connections to emphasize vocational discernment as it relates to career choices, and worked with the Civic Engagement program to help students think broadly about vocation and social issues.  She engaged with students through Social Work and Integrative Studies classes, student groups focused on civic engagement, and reflective retreats.  Miriam says that her vocation and greatest joy is helping students "become the people they are capable of becoming."
