Northfield Connect: Serve and Learn in the Local Community

Short presentations from local community leaders and about their organizations and opportunities to get involved through internships, academic civic engagement project, community-based work study, volunteering projects, etc., followed by opportunities to network with community leaders in the Crossroads.

Organizations that will be presenting: Cannon River Watershed Partnership, Growing Up Healthy, HOPE Center, The Key (Union of Youth), Laura Baker Services, League of Women Voters, Middle School Youth Center, Northfield Area Family Y.M.C.A, Northfield Arts Guild, Northfield.org, Northfield ECFE, Northfield Healthy Community Initiative, Tacking Obstacles Raising College Hopes (TORCH), War Kid Relief, 5th Bridge and others.

Volunteer Network Fair

Presentation by Chad Pregrake– Founder and President of Living Lands and Waters

Chad Pregrake, Founder and President of Living Lands & Waters will present his journey to becoming America’s only “industrial strength” river clean-up organization. Sponsored by the Cannon River Watershed Partnership, The Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation, and St. Olaf College. The CRWP will also be sponsoring a Cannon River Clean-up on Saturday, September 20th from 9:00am- 12:00pm. Please contact Lisa Carey (lisa@crwp.net or 507-786-8400) if you would like to volunteer.

Leaders for Social Change Chapel Talk and Reception
Thursday, September 24th

Learn about nine students’ experiences interning with local nonprofit organizations as part of the Leaders for Social Change Summer Internship Program.

Academic Civic Engagement complements traditional coursework by encouraging students to learn in the community and to apply academic knowledge and tools to address community issues.  Common approaches to academic civic engagement include: service-learning, community based research, public scholarship and other forms of community-based learning. During the 2008-09 academic year, more than 14 courses, impacting over 250 students included an academic civic engagement component.
