The Joy Korda Schaefer Scholarship
for Summer Experiential Learning
Description
Named for Joy Korda Schaefer, who during her life demonstrated a desire to learn by doing, the scholarship is given to student(s) participating in off-campus experiential learning opportunities that contribute to their search for meaning in life and learning.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be in good academic standing
- Must be enrolled for subsequent fall term
Application Procedure
Prepare a written statement (not to exceed two pages in length) that:
- highlights goals for vocational growth and how the summer experience will contribute to a better understanding of these goals;
- outlines current or previous coursework and/or experiences that demonstrate preparation for the proposed summer experience;
- explains specific summer activities, including the organization, immediate supervisor, and anticipated tasks;
- specifies ways that reflection on the summer's experience will take place; and
- describes why the scholarship is important to allow pursuit of this experience.
This two-page statement should be accompanied by a letter of support from a member of the St. Olaf faculty (letter must be in a sealed, signed envelope).

Award Amount: $2,000
In most instances awards in the amount of $2,000 per student will be given. The review committee reserves the right to disburse scholarship funds in different amounts depending upon the number of applicants, available funds, and demonstrated need.
Terms of Agreement
- Recipients of the summer fellowship must be engaged for a minimum of 8 weeks during the summer.
- Upon returning to campus in the fall, each recipient shall summarize the summer's experience in a short (not less than two pages) report and meet with a member of the Center for Experiential Learning staff to explore the vocational insights gained by the summer experience.
