Nathaniel KingsriterInterview questions for Northfield Reads & Counts Program Participants

Nathaniel Kingsriter ’12
Hometown: St. Paul, MN

Why did you become involved with the Northfield reads and Counts Tutor Program?
Initially it was simply because I was assigned to the CEL for my work study award. I stayed because I enjoyed working with the kids, I got to know some of my tutees really well which made work fun. Plus it is a way to get off of campus, which is hard when you get into a routine of study and class.

Describe the student, grade level, and subject matter you work with each week.
I worked at the middle school so I worked with kids from sixth through eighth grade. Most were kids who had trouble staying on task, and as a result struggled with classes. Subjects covered a full range: history day projects, writing assignments, and biology class but most was help with math, or reading. I think the hardest thing was to keep kids from distracting themselves, but then again that's what middle school is all about...

What skills and communication techniques do you use or have learned from tutoring?
I learned how to keep a friendly relationship going while being assertive. A lot of this came from the training sessions and suggestions teachers gave to always be encouraging, while saying more than just "keep it up", "good".

Describe the relationship you have with the students and teachers you work with.
The teachers are all very appreciative of the tutors. Just being there gives them a break and they are, almost always, very willing to show their appreciation. The kids are cool. Especially the ones I work with every week are fun to be around.

How do you approach challenges in your work or getting to work.
There are lots of resources and contact people to get a hold of if there are any problems I have. I talk with the contact person at the middle school (formerly Amy Lunderby) every day and tell her anything that is a concern or that went especially well. Diana is always helpful, and always asking about problems that come up, especially with transit.

Describe what you have learned, gained, or experienced by participating in the tutoring program.
I have learned some valuable techniques for tutoring, it is very helpful to have a place to practice those skills, too.
