Kauffman Fellowship
Though the support of Michael G. Kauffman M.D., Ph.D. '85, the Kauffman Fellowship will award one student $3500.00 to support a 10-12 week summer research position in a biomedical laboratory pertinent to the student's interest. Amherst College labs are not eligible placements. The research should be in the area of modern biology relevant to medicine, i.e., molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, biochemistry, etc. First-year students, Sophomores, and Juniors are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to students with significant science coursework. Apply for the Kauffman Fellowship online through the Career Center's online Experience database site (Jobs & Internships | Internships | keyword: Kauffman). The deadline for submission of applications is in mid-January and applicants will be informed of the results by early March. * Lindbergh Grants Program
The program was founded to further Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh's shared vision of a balance between technological advancement and environmental preservation. Each year grants of up to $10,580 (a symbolic amount representing the cost of the "Spirit of St. Louis") are given for projects in the following categories: agriculture; aviation/aerospace; conservation of natural resources; education (including humanities/education, the arts and intercultural communication); exploration; health; and waste minimization and management.

Hartford Hospital
Pre-medical students are offered an introduction to research methodology, patient treatment, and ethical issues in medicine as well as exposure to a broad spectrum of health care providers within a large community teaching hospital. The program takes place from June - August. The Minnesota High Tech Foundation (MHTF)
The MHTF will award scholarships to undergraduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines.  These awards include six $2,000 scholarships and three $10,000 awards.

Stanford Biodesign Innovation Fellowships
Provides graduate-level engineering and science students, plus medical students, interns, residents, fellows and postdocs with an intensive, year-long, project-based experience in biomedical technology invention. Successful applicants will be awarded a named fellowship.

American Heart Association Undergraduate Student Research Program
Program offers students to explore careers in heart or stroke research in cardiovascular research laboratories in California, Nevada or Utah for 10 weeks during the summer to work under the supervision of experienced scientists. Projects range from basic molecular research to direct physiological studies. Some opportunities for participation in more clinical investigations also available. This program is open to students of Junior or Senior status enrolled in a college or university at time of application, attend an institution in California, Nevada or Utah or be a resident of one of these states. Must have completed a combined total of at least four semesters of six quaters of biological sciences, physics or chemistry. Must have completed at least one quarter of calculus, statistics, computational methods or computer science. $4000 stipend for 10 weeks of summer research.

Fanny and John Hertz Foundation Fellowships
Provides fellowships tenable at three dozen of the nation's finest universities for graduate work leading to award of the Ph.D. degree in applications of the physical sciences. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America , and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency. College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of engineering, applied physics, applied chemistry, and applied mathematics, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply. Fellows must attend one of 36 specified graduate schools.

ARM (formerly Associated Western Universities) awards hundreds of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate fellowships and internships to qualified applicants in science, mathematics, engineering, technology and business, offering fellows the chance to obtain hands-on experience in their field at government and private organizations.

* Dr. Scholl Science Fellowships at the Lincoln Park Zoo
Criteria for selection of fellows: Fellowships are restricted to (1) undergraduate students in good academic standing, (2) recent graduates, or (3) graduate students with research interests that coincide with the zoo staff. Each fellowship carries a salary of $3750 for 12 weeks. All living and other expenses are the responsibility of the fellow.

Lambaréné Schweitzer Fellows Program
The Lambaréné Schweitzer Fellows Program sends four medical students each year to work for three month rotations at the Schweitzer Hospital in Gabon in the fields of surgery, internal medicine, and pediatrics. Fellows work as junior physicians, supervised by hospital medical staff. Fellows are eligible for pediatrics, medicine, or surgery rotations. Third-year medical students are eligible to apply. You must speak French.

* Environmental Careers Organization (ECO)
ECO places approximately 400 interns each year in environmental "internships," though most of these pay quite well and provide good entry-level opportunities for graduating seniors. If you are a college junior, senior or graduate student, OR you have completed your Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. degree within the last three years, you are eligible. Internships last from 3 months to 2 years. Average stipend is $425 per week.

The NSF Graduate Teaching Fellows Program at Duke, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), is a collaborative program between Duke University Marine Laboratory and educators and administrators of Carteret County public schools and is designed to provide Duke NSF Graduate Teaching Fellows the opportunity to combine K-12 teaching experiences with research in the thematic area of Life in Variable and Polluted Marine and Coastal Environments.

* Student Conservation Association
SCA sponsors several conservation and environmental programs, mainly in national parks, forests and wildlife refuges. Undergraduates and recent alumni are eligible for the program. SCA now offers AmeriCorps education awards of between $1,180 to $4,725 to individuals who successfully complete an SCA Conservation Internship. The award can be applied toward existing college loans or future tuition. Plus, your students get college loan deferment and SCA's generous financial package of travel, housing, a weekly living allowance and insurance.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Awards at least 80 five-year fellowships for full-time study toward a Ph.D. or an Sc.D. degree in the biological sciences. The fellowships are intended for students who have completed less than one year of graduate study toward an M.S., a Ph.D., or an Sc.D. degree in the biological sciences. Students who hold or are pursuing medical or dental degrees (M.D., D.O., D.V.M., D.D.S.) may also be eligible to apply for fellowship support for study toward a Ph.D. or an Sc.D. The program is open to both U.S. citizens and foreign citizens. Students with U.S. citizenship may take the fellowship abroad. Non-U.S. citizens must study in the United States .

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program consists of two competitions: NSF Graduate Fellowships and NSF Minority Graduate Fellowships. Each of these competitions has a component for Women in
Engineering and Computer and Information Science. These fellowships are awarded to outstanding students for graduate study in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering.
