TreeTRANSFORMING PRIVILEGE: IDEALS TO ACTION

A Reflective Retreat
October 13 – 14 2008

Over fall break 2008, students attended the second annual Transforming Privilege Retreat, funded by the Lilly Sustainability Grant through the Center for Experiential Learning.

The retreat was a two-day opportunity to reflect on the many faces of privilege that we encounter in our lives as students, activists, and community members, and the ways we can transform privilege into action for social change.

We moved from exploring our identities and privileges on a personal level to the exploration of privilege on broader levels, and looked at concrete ways to build solidarity and make change.

Facilitators included storyteller and activist Julia Uleberg, as well as the student leadership committee for the retreat: Erin Anderson ’09, Michaela McLaughlin ’10, Caitlin Marine ’10, and Chad Goodroad ’09.

Staff advisors from the CEL were Nate Jacobi (Civic Engagement) and Miriam Samuelson (Lilly Vocational Intern).

Now we’d like to share our experience with YOU, and encourage you to participate in consciousness-raising activities on campus. Below are links to various projects and activities that have grown out of the work we did together on the Transforming Privilege Retreat, most of which can be viewed on the Activism for Social Change network calendar.

We hope that you’ll join us in recognizing the many forms of social, institutional, and interpersonal privilege that exist and the oppression that can stem from them—and then join us in transformation for positive social change.
