I Don't Have Any Idea about What Types of Occupations Are Out There.
New job titles are being created every day that are very specific to different fields. Start looking at occupational areas in very broad terms and begin the process of narrowing in on something more specific.
q Come in to the CEL and browse the shelves of books under "Exploring Careers and Majors." There are books within interest areas such as education, music, the sciences, etc. that describe "Careers in ..." Or "Jobs in ..." (a particular interest area).
q Log in to VAULT online career library (Password: careers). Browse the list of career profiles. Also, scroll down to "A Day in the Life" under Career Advice Articles and browse that list.
q Try doing an internet search for the websites of professional associations in an area of interest. These groups often display GREAT career exploration resources that have the most up-to-date career listings and descriptions of even lesser-known careers in that area. For example, try going to a search engine and typing in "Sociology Association." You will find the website for the American Sociological Association, which has numerous career resources for students. You can do this for almost any area: Psychology, history, oceanography-you name it! The CEL also has directories of professional organizations that you could browse to get names of associations for which to search for a website.
q Attend CEL career panels to hear alums talk about what they do and have the opportunity to ask them questions. Watch for posters or sign up to be on our email alias!
q Try doing a search on the Online Alumni Directory to see some occupations you may not know about. Log in according to the directions provided there and choose to do a search. Try doing a simple search by occupational area, and from the list of alums that results, click on them one at a time and view what they are currently doing. Or try a second search by setting occupation back to "Not Selected" and choose any major to get a different list of alums and their occupations.
q Talk to professors about what career options are available in certain interest areas.
